Movies that show people smoking on screen to be rated R?

Movies that show people smoking on screen to be rated R?

Ad Attacks Smoking in Movies
Brandweek

Tobacco marketers will take yet another hit this week when a new ad attacking smoking in movies appears in The New York Times, Roll Call and The Hill. The effort is being bankrolled by the American Legacy Foundation and several other public health and anti-smoking advocates who are trying to get all movies that show people smoking on screen to be rated R, which would restrict attendance to people over the age of 17. The ad is the result of a two-year study by Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Hanover, N.H., which found that one-third of U.S adolescents between 10 and 14 years of age who smoke started as a direct result of seeing smoking in the movies. The ad urges the movie industry to exercise social responsibility and extend the R-rating to movies with tobacco imagery. It states: "This voluntary step need not result in more films being rated R. It will simply keep smoking out of future G, PG and PG-13 films, producing huge public health benefits at virtually no cost."

I gotta say, I've been quit now for more than 8 years, but when I see Mel Gibson, or some other such actor light up, MAN, I get the biggest urge to smoke.

And I'm not be sarcastic either. I reall do get the urge to smoke. Though, that was true when I was still a smoker.

I can't see how this would be bad, but laying down yet another rule when common sense would do so much better.

Whatever helps get teeny boppers from starting or to help them kick the habit. A line needs to be drawn somewhere & the entertainment industry isn't helping with family values.

This is one of the most ridiculous proposals I have heard in a long time. Do we do the same with any movie that has individuals drinking alcohol? All this would do is further dilute the meaning of the movie ratings system.

i think it's stupid. i think a better solution would be to prevent tobacco companies from paying for product placement in anything under R

Who cares about hollywood? They make money hand over fist. This is a lame arguement against this proposal.

The line needs to be drawn, but it needs to focus more on violence getting more cautious ratings than sex or profanity.

If this proposal goes through then you could argue that just about any movie should be rated R. Kids are being locked up for violence, make any movies that have any violence R rated, underage drinking is a problem, make any movie with drinking in it rated R, so on and so forth. It's a very slippery slope.

Don't you think they should at least focus on making movies with illegal activity R rated movies?
