Anyone see the movie "Hostel"?

Geez, what an utterly sick movie!! No redeeming quality at all.

Some of these new movies go way overboard in portaying slashing and slicing.

"The Devils Rejects" was another sicky...Yecchhh

don't wanna see it. made the mistake of seeing "the hills have eyes." the trailer made it look like a quiet psychological thriller that relied heavily on the desolate beauty of the desert setting.... NOT. it was gore, gore, gore.

newsweek had an interesting article about the current crop of super-gory films. apparently, it's a cycle related to the national psyche. when things feel uncertain and it feels like the rug may get yanked out from under your feet at any time, we want gore and lots of it. last cycle was in the dog days of vietnam...

Well Tarantino was involved with this movie, so why does the gratitious slashing surpise you?

The movie is primarily two things: a tongue-in-cheek homage to the slasher genre and also a political satire about the zenophobic atmosphere of the time (i.e. Abu Ghraib, etc.). I would even go so far as saying it's a black comedy. It separates itself from the plethora of average "horror movies" by doing exactly what you hated about it: going overboard and making the audience respond. But I understand it's definitely not for everybody. It takes one heck of sense of humor and a strong palate to see beyond the visual stimulation.

This is the first movie in ages that I am just unwilling to endure. And I saw Wolf Creek, High Tension, etc. But I cannot for the life of me understand what kind of person enjoys watching people get tortured.

Interesting perspective, I never thought of it that way.

I saw it, was somewhat disturbed by it, but overall it was an OK movie.

just watched it last night, pretty good movie. we're getting ready to go to italy, so perhaps the pending trip made it all the better. i was no more gore that saw or saw II, if you liked those. in fact, i'd say less gore than saw II.

Previews made it look almost like Saw and Saw II.

I "started" seeing it-then I walked out...some movies just aren't worth sitting through.

I guess there are some movie watchers who would have enjoyed working for Adolf.

I think that's a pretty unfair statement. Just because it was an interesting movie, doesn't mean that I would go out and torture somebody. That 1:1 relation hardly makes sense in any movies.

For example, just because you liked Ben Hur's charriot scene doesn't mean you are going to go out, buy a charriot with spikes on the wheels, and run around Manhattan chopping people's legs off, popping people's tires, and whipping people with horse whips.

Or how about Kill Bill, does that mean I am going to go into a room full of people and dismember them with a katana?

Fiction is fiction, if people don't like a particular genre of it, then don't watch it. However, to equate one's enjoyment of fiction to reality is hardly fair.

What an asnine statement. Although, in the case of this movie, there is something telling about an individual that finds any redeeming value in hours of torture.

Again, nice blanket statement, no better than what he said before. Just because *you* didn't like it doesn't mean everybody else is "sick" for liking it.

neither of these statements are very fair. the movie was not about "watching hours of torture" or anything such as that.

in fact, the movie was roughly 1.5 hours, and i'd say there was only 20 minutes of actual torture scenes. however, about 30 mintues was devoted to drugs and sex. it's no fairer to say that the move was about watching hours and hours of drugs and sex or that some people would have enjoyed working for Larry Flynt than it is to make either of the above "observations."

and on a side note, some of the the girls in this movie have outstanding breasts.

It's a specific genre flick if you don't like the genre you won't enjoy the movie. If you love the genre you'll love the flick.

If you think these new horror movies are bad, go see the French flick Irreversible. It will churn your stomach.

just saw this last night with a friend.
i thought it was funny!

gory scenes - check. (not much of it - more just towrads the end. it builds you up through out the first 3/4 of teh movie)
profanity - check.
sex scenes - check.
drugs - check, check and check.
breast and frontal shots - check, check check and check. another check.

its like eli roth did an homage to a lot of what tarantino would have put in, and at the same time ripped off/paid homage to a few japanese gore films also (i wont mention it but i saw it coming 5 minutes before the scene even unfolded)

I like the story (up until the last guy....well, i wont spoil it). but for teh most part the movie was ok. i thought some parets were hoakey and downright hilarious.
not that i like seeing people getting tortured, but it had a certain sense of "its something that can and may actually be happening right now", and that makes you uneasy. it made me feel uneasy, and thats the hallmark of a good horror film.

I think thats what turned off those that did not like the film. the fact that one can actually relate to the film, when its NOT supposed to be real, or its NOT supposed to make you think it can be real, but you have that nagging feeling of it.

Man, you are absolutely right. A few of the most disturbing scenes I've ever seen, and a great film!

I don't know I liked the idea of it but I thought it wasn't executed properly, the ending was gay as it gets. When a movie is that dark, dont give it a Disney ending, wtf was that. I thought the idea was awesome but the film itself was kinda fruity
