Hasn't Been A Good Week For USC Football

First the Reggie Bush housing fiasco, now a rape charge against one of their QB's.

Quote:
LOS ANGELES -- Southern California backup quarterback Mark Sanchez was arrested Wednesday after a female student reported to police that she had been sexually assaulted by him earlier in the day, police said.

Sanchez, 19, was arrested around 4 p.m. just north of campus and was being booked for investigation of sexual assault, police Officer Jason Lee said.

No other details were immediately available.

USC officials said they will temporarily suspend Sanchez while police conduct their investigation.

"The university takes charges of sexual assault seriously," Michael Jackson, USC vice president of student affairs, said in a statement. "Depending on the facts as established by the LAPD, we will determine the appropriate action. In the interim, the student will be placed on interim suspension while the case is pending."

USC coach Pete Carroll said he was aware of Sanchez's arrest and that the Trojan football program would cooperate with police and "follow along with whatever action the university takes."

Sanchez is listed on the Trojans' depth chart as the backup to John David Booty, but was expected to battle for the starting job this fall. Booty practiced only once this spring before he injured his back and had to undergo surgery.

Sanchez, a redshirt freshman, played the recent spring scrimmage and has been practicing with the first unit.

His arrest was one of several off-field problems for USC within the last year. However, no charges were brought in the other cases.

And the hits keep on coming...

Quote:
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Southern California officials are investigating whether an upscale apartment that wide receiver Dwayne Jarrett shared with former teammate Matt Leinart violated NCAA rules, according to a published report Sunday.

Leinart's father, Bob, put the duo on the lease at the secured apartment complex downtown after Leinart moved out of his former residence near campus because he was constantly hounded by fans.
Leinart - the Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback picked 10th by the Arizona Cardinals in the NFL draft Saturday - and Jarrett each paid $650 a month for the apartment that cost $3,866 a month, according to the Los Angeles Times. Leinart's father paid the difference and said he's been told Jarrett might have to repay him about $10,000, the newspaper reported.

University compliance officials are looking into whether the football program received an unfair advantage. While Bob Leinart would have been allowed to make up the difference for his son, he might not have been allowed to do so for another player.

Tim Tessalone, USC's director of sports information, confirmed Sunday that an investigation involving Jarrett's living arrangement was under way.

"At this point, we're still gathering information," Tessalone told The Associated Press, declining further comment.

The investigation is the latest cloud over the Trojans' football program. The Pac-10 is looking into the living arrangement of 2005 Heisman winner Reggie Bush's family, who lived in a house owned by a man who reportedly sought to market him while he played for USC last season. NCAA rules prohibit student-athletes and their families from receiving extra benefits from agents or their representatives.

The police is continuing its investigation into a female student's accusation that backup quarterback Mark Sanchez sexually assaulted her. Sanchez was freed last week after posting $200,000 bail. He was due back in court on May 17.

I don't really agree with this one at all.. I mean if I had a friend and my dad was paying most of my rent and his.. That's just that. It had nothing to do with Football or trying to get an endorsement or anything. Should be perfectly legal in that situation.

No but he is a friend of Bob Leinarts son that happens to be his roommate. So he gets hooked up in the deal. Big whoop. Now if Bob Leinart turned around and signed Dwayne Jarrett.. or Had a friend that did, or received any kind of monetary gain from things, That would be different. In this case, he helped out a kid that was in the same situation that his son was in.

Hate to disagree with you on your birthday gear02, but I think it should be different. Way too many exuberant alumni would be paying for luxury apartments for star players. That's why NCAA has the rules.

If you allow "paying for my son's friend" how do you disallow paying for anyone else that is not a family member?

That will suck for Jarrett if he has to pay back the $10,000. He probably wouldn't have shared the room with Leinart if he knew it was going to cost him that much. Shoot, there are some decent places to stay in Downtown LA (which would still be close and far more private than campus-area housing) for less than $10k.
