Devil Rays' Young suspended indefinitely after hitting umpire with bat

Rays' Young suspended indefinitely
Top prospect threw his bat at umpire after being ejected

Delmon Young has been suspended indefinitely by the International League, pending a review of the events in Wednesday night's Durham-Pawtucket game.
Young, 20, the Devil Rays' top prospect, threw his bat at an umpire, striking him in the chest.

Thursday's suspension comes after a May incident,
in which Delmon Young bumped an umpire while playing in Double-A.

"The Devil Rays' organization supports the decision by International League president Randy Mobley to suspend Delmon Young indefinitely for the incident that took place last night in Pawtucket," said Rays excecutive vice president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman in a release. "We do not tolerate this type of conduct from anyone in the Devil Rays' organization. We will meet with Delmon and his representatives as soon as possible to further address this unfortunate situation. It cannot and will not be repeated."

Young took a called third strike from Pawtucket's Jon Lester in the first inning of the International League contest. After the call, Young glared at the home-plate umpire and did not leave the batter's box; he had taken a couple of steps back toward the dugout when the umpire ejected him from the game. Young then took a couple of more steps before he threw the bat at the umpire.

According to The Associated Press, Young flipped the bat underhand. It sailed end over end and hit the umpire in the chest.

Young is considered by many to be the best prospect in Minor League Baseball; he is ranked No. 1 by MLB.com's prospect list. He was voted as the Rays' Minor League player of the year in 2005, as well as Baseball America's player of the year for 2005. Young, the first overall pick in the 2003 First-Year Player Draft, is the brother of Tigers first baseman/outfielder Dmitri Young.

Wednesday night's incident was not Young's first with an umpire. In May, he was suspended three games for bumping an umpire while playing for Montgomery of the Double-A Southern League, and he nearly was ejected earlier this season after flinging a bat in the air and having it land about 20 feet from a pitcher who had just hit him with a pitch.

Minor League Baseball games have been umpired by replacements for every game thus far in the 2006 season, with the regular crews currently out on strike.

Young was hitting .333 with 12 steals (tied for the IL lead with teammate B.J. Upton) entering the game.

This was all over SportsCenter last night. You can't see him on camera so we don't know if he meant to hit him with the bat or not. If it was just him stupidly tossing it in the unp's direction then he should get a big suspension. If he meant to clock the ump with it then he should be removed from the game.

Bumping, arguing, and kicking dirt on upms has a long tradition in the game. But a dangerous physical assault like this can't be tolerated.

50 games!

Quote:
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Top Tampa Bay prospect Delmon Young was suspended 50 games without pay by the International League on Tuesday, two weeks after throwing a bat that hit a replacement umpire in the arm.

Randy Mobley, President of the International League, said that the suspension, retroactive to April 27, is the longest known penalty in the 123-year history of the International League, according to the information uncovered during the investigation. The reprimand also includes a minimum of 50 hours of community service. Mobley said he looked at precedents established in baseball, and in other sports.

Immediately after Young threw the bat, he retreated to the clubhouse and phoned Devil Rays general manager Andrew Friedman to tell him what happened, and Mobley said that Young's cooperation with his investigation "could not have been better.... He knew right from the start that he had messed up big-time, and his attitude continued to be that all along." Young was very interested in including the community service aspect of his penalty all along, Mobley said.

In his investigation, Mobley said he could not determine, with absolute certainty, that Young had intended to hit the umpire when he threw the bat.
"If I had, I would have suspended him for the entire season," Mobley said.

"He explained to me that it was his intent to throw his bat and throw his helmet back toward to the plate to show his disgust with the call, as we've seen in other situations, and there was a miscalculation.

"My goal was to arrive at something fair and just, and I feel comfortable that we've done that."

The 20-year-old Young, brother of Detroit star Dmitri Young and considered one of the best players in the minors, was ejected in the first inning following a called third strike in the Durham Bulls' Triple-A game at Pawtucket, R.I., on April 26.

When Young took his time leaving the batter's box, the umpire tossed him. Young then flipped his bat underhand and it sailed end over end, striking the umpire. The umpire, whose name was not released, did not appear injured and remained in the game.

"I sincerely regret my actions in the game yesterday," Young said in a statement in April released by the office of his agent, Arn Tellem.

"Regrettably, in the heat of the competition my emotions got the better of me.

"My behavior was completely unacceptable. I want everyone to know that I recognize that it is never right to throw a bat and I certainly never intended for the bat to make contact with the umpire. Nevertheless, I owe an apology to my team, the fans and most importantly to the umpire, for the incident. I am sorry."
