SAN DIEGO -- Steve Howe, a former All-Star closer whose immense pitching talent was interrupted by chemical addiction, was killed Friday morning when his pickup truck overturned in Coachella, Calif. He was 48. Howe had been in Arizona on business and was driving to his home in Valencia, Calif., 30 miles north of Los Angeles.

The left-hander, a first-round pick by the Dodgers out of the University of Michigan in 1979, combined poise, command, fearlessness and a 94-mph fastball to win Rookie of the Year honors the season after he left college. His 17 saves that year stood as a Dodgers rookie record until last year, when Yhency Brazoban had 21.
