George Lucas throws in the towel...

and decides that billions of dollars isn't enough...

So now, lets re-re-re-re-re-release the originals and make more money!

I am happy he is doing this, but I wonder why...

Because so many of the whiny ass fans complained when he re-did them. Granted, adding the new Luke and Obi-Wan at the end of VI (I think?) was a bit over the top, but other than that, I was glad he remastered them and added some decent CGI effects.

Hell, I'd like to see them remake all 3 original movies with todays technologies. Unfortunately, you'd have to do away with the actors from the old movies, which would be a damn shame. Some of their performances were really pretty good...

Some of the changes he made were OK. However, many were just stupid and uneeded. Changing of the ewok/celebration song in VI? Greedo shoots first in IV? Adding in a no-depth Jabba in IV? Then, as you mentioned, adding in the actors. It was all a bit much.

There is a point where enhancing the movie is distinct from changing it. The new ewok song sucked...

They took so much heat from fans that wanted the originals that they almost had to do this.

Hooray! I never have to watch Greedo shoot first ever again!

Yup, I think I agree with ya on all points here... The original song was the goods. Can't say I was a big enough original fan to notice the Jabba thing though...

The scene where he added Jabba into the movie when Han went back to the Falcon in the first movie. While I am not an uber-SW nerd with posters in my bedroom (my wife made me take them down...(I am joking)), I noticed it right away when watching the re-released theatre versions in the 96/97 or whenever timeperiod. It was one of the first blending of real-life actors with CGI on a close and imposed scale, and it looked horrible. It literally looked like a 2d Jabba in front of a 3d Han. He improved it over the years though.

Yeah the CGI got better but another part of the problem was that the scene was not shot with the intention of having something edited in. The acting is different andin this case it showed.

Yeah, I'll have the current version, a version ripped off of old Laserdiscs (the only way to get a nice copy of the originals) and now this. And if I read it correctly you have to buy a package containing the original AND SE versions.

I thought they changed the Jabba the Hutt character to match the new Jabba in Return of the Jedi, meaning Jabba in Jedi was different from the cut version of Empire. When they released the remastered version they included the cut footage of Jabba from Empire, but inserted the Jedi version of the Jabba character rather than the original.

I'd wait for it to come out on one of the HD formats.

Me too. Now I have no idea what happened. I just remember watching the movie re-releases of the first 3 episodes and seeing Han kinda climb over/pass through Jabba. Unnecessary scene. The move was fine without it.

What did they do to luke in VI? I haven't seen the new versions, but I heard they replaced Anikan with the Anikan from episode III instead of that random guy, but did they change Luke? He was still alive, no? And Obi-Wan shouldn't have been changed back to McGregor, or was he? Alec Guinness deserves that honor. He did die at that age, so his ghost should be about that age, right?
