I am not sure, but I was talking about this with my wife. It could be sustained bombardment of soundwaves, or the fact that you can make the waves stronger. |

You don't want to be the cause of your baby's deafness.

Supposedly there are particular frequencies and settings that have been deemed dangerous to fetus' (feti?) and doctors don't want untrained people operating them.
Not sure what would happen...a human beaching? ![]()

Now if everybody's gonna have a machine at home, how are the doctors gonna get paid? First come the HMO's, now you've got DIY sonograms. The doctors are going crazy!! Next thing you know, clinics will be going out of business and doctors will be forced to provide....

While deafness is unlikely, I can see definite reasons NOT to have everyone and his brother playing ultrasound tech and scanning everyone, especially any fetus in utero. Yeah, we know it's pretty safe, and it has been used for years with few complications, but there aren't good studies to say it's completely safe, especially at higher amplitudes, etc. Plus, most non-docs/techs/etc. don't know wth they're looking at anyway. Ultrasounds take a while to understand how to read and visualize, much less use.

Not to mention how hard and where to press. I could see someone getting over-aggressive with an ultrasound machine near the end of labor getting a funny (well, funny for me, probably not as funny for them) surprise.

Hah! Didn't think of that. But yeah, as far as we know, it's pretty safe. Would I encourage a non-trained person to use one? Hell no. I've used them many times, but I don't even trust myself with setting up the machine and properly using it. I'd feel more comfortable doing an appendectomy or something. At least I'd know what I'm looking at and how to control the bleeding. |
