Investing 101

I'm intending to start getting involved in investing. I plan to "practice" for maybe 6 months or so with trading simulations as I learn the basics and get familiar with the overall trends. I have many friends who are in finance that can guide me through my learning curve, but I'd like to learn as much on my own as possible. Can people point me to a good "investing 101"-type site for a novice to learn all the necessary basics. Any other personal tips would be great. Thanks.

Start reading the Wall Street Journal regularly. Financial Times is also a good source of daily information. Reading these publications will keep you in touch with the business world and economy in general, which are important to your investment success.

Motley Fool used to have pretty good basic info. I haven't visited them in a while. http://www.fool.com/
Might search for some of Susie Orman's things.

one of my friends who works for a hedgefund told me to try to pick up a used CFA review book to read. Or if you need more basic he suggested "managing your personal finances" by Joan S Ryan. that is like a high school or intro college course textbook.
