Sales Tax between CA and OR
I've heard that because I live in Oregon, if I travel to other states (specifically CA) I don't have to pay sales tax. Does anyone know if this is true? How can I prove it to the sales clerk if they do charge me?

I would think that it's the other way around. That if a non-Oregon resident bought something in Oregon, they wouldn't have to pay sales tax. But then again, I've never been to Oregon.

That is not true. I have worked in various retail positions and never did someone out of state avoid paying sales tax. If you go to Europe and collect the right forms on qualified purchases you can get your VAT tax refunded but not in the US. Not sure if you went to Canada. Internet shopping may be different provided that the company you buy from does not have facilities in your state.

True. If you purchase by mail or internet, you do not pay sales tax unless you reside in the same state where the business is registered/licensed and that state has a sales tax. Also, you can be exempt from a sales tax if purchasing for export outside the U.S. even if you are physically purchasing. In Ca. at southern border to Mexico we have Duty Free stores where you may purchase items to bring into Mexico. I used to buy items there and just walk across border and walk back through to U.S. with same items. Items are less expensive and no sales tax. ![]()

I have been to Oregon and Ohio as well, neither having a sales tax. It's weird buying an item and paying exactly what is printed on the sales tag. ( For non-food items that is. California doesn't charge a sales tax on food items except prepared foods like in restaurants. ) |

Well, you don't pay at the time of purchase, but I know at least in Michigan you need to declare these items on your state income tax filing & pay at the end of the year. |

Washington doesn't charge Oregon residents sales tax. You can show them your OR driver's license to avoid paying tax. They passed the law to encourage Oregon shoppers to come to Washington, since so many Washington shoppers come to Oregon.
No such law in any other state.
