I do my Fed manually and my state (CA) online. Just got the Fed forms the other day but none of my tax documents have come yet.

Do my own. Used H&R once but my return figures were the same as theirs so never used them again.

If you are able, it's nice to do your own taxes becuase then you understand the system better and know better how to minimize your taxes.

I've been using Turbo Tax myself..

I'm still a little dissapointed in them from last year since they took away the "1 free internet submission coupon". That used to make the price really worth the cost of the software, but double dipping and charging for Federal and State internet filing is harsh.

I wonder if they are doing the same thing this year?

I've been using TurboTax for over 10 years now. I've never had a problem and it has helped me plan my deductions and save even more money.

Have you been able to use it? I tried and I get sent to the Turbo Tax site but it says it's down for maintenance or something. Maybe it's just my computer.

Well you have to use the online version... it's not "downloadable".

But still... free is free. Most other free places, I don't qualify due to income restrictions.

I used to always do my taxes, and when I got married, my wife insisted we use her accountant to do them. So our deal was, I'll do our taxes online the way I normally would, and we'd turn all our stuff into him, and if he saved us at least what it cost to pay for the service, we'd keep using him.

I'll be damned if he hasn't always been able to find something the online programs miss that has paid for himself and more so we've been going to him since.

(Sorry for digging up a crusty thread!)
So, what are the pros/cons of using TurboTax software as opposed to using the online version?

Did both the Federal and State in 1-1/2 hours manually. Most of the time spent was retrieving the income and deductions from various sources.

I imagine the online TT is about the same. But if you have AAA or Statefarm, you don't have to buy it at the store like the rest of us. Maybe their is an online version for us non special people but i imagine you would need to pay anyways.

The online version was pretty much the same as the one you usually buy on CD.

The main difference is... the one you buy on CD you can use to do up to 5 returns (I think that is the count) while the online version is a one person per use form.

More or less, it calculates the taxes all the same. I even downloaded my file so that if I use a CD version next year, I can still import my tax information just like I've done in previous years.

BTW... side benefite of the State Farm FREE version... both the Federal and State E-File were FREE for both returns. I was ecstactic!!! (that alone saved me over $30 on the filing fees)

I used the online version of TurboTax to do my returns today. I had never used TurboTax before and I was surprised at how painless the whole process was. And it was free for people with income below $50,000. I too was ecstatic. Then I got really sad.

No, I think this kind of mood swing is to be expected when dealing with any government forms.
