BofA's awesome Countrywide tax break
http://money.cnn.com/2008/01/11/news...ex.htm?cnn=yes
If B of A isn't paying those taxes, somebody else eventually will- probably you and me. Quote:

That is just delightful. I was wondering why they were so eager to seal this deal.

This article is a bit misleading. Yes, BoA would be able to use the losses to offset some gains and realize some tax savings. However, taxpayers are not going to be paying additional monies as a result. There will just be $500 Million less in tax revenue.

Please... that is like calling a $40M budget increase instead of a $60M increase a budget "cut". Dave. |

$500 million is a relative drop in the budgetary bucket. Along the same lines, if I make less money this year than last, there is less that I pay in taxes... therefore, putting the burden on the taxpayers?
This goes to a fundamental difference in belief, does it not? It's what comes in that can be/should be spent. Not enough coming in? Then spend less. More than enough coming in? Refund it. Dave. |

It's not like BoA is creating a phantom loss. The loss already exists. If Countrywide stayed independent, they would be taking the loss. By buying them, BoA takes the loss. Either way the loss is there.
