Well I pulled the trigger

I took the ASVAB for the Army last night and did had the physical this morning (that was a nightmare). I was still undecided as to whether or not I would join until I took the test, and somehow pulled an 82 out of my butt, which opened every job for me. I ended up picking Army Special Forces, and signed a rather long contract (6 years active, 2 reserves). I ended up with a $30,000 dollar signing bonus, and will be leaving for Georgia in January, which is quite a nice time to leave the midwest. Anyway, I would like to thank you all for your input to the threads that were up. I took it all into consideration and it was a great help!

Congrats!

Enjoy Ft. Benning - a nice post if you're driving through, but then all sorts of hell if you're doing Basic (or rather OSUT) there.

Do whatever PT you can right now - try to get a promotion to E-2 or even E-3 before you ship, that's a few thousand dollars worth of difference in pay right there.

Good luck Nate - my brother is nearing the end of his enlistment and while he's happy to be getting out, he seriously thought about re-enlisting because of the experiences he had (the bonuses he got for having a college degree and a highly-sought after specialty - Logistics - didn't hurt either).

Recruit one or two friends you could get to E-2. :-)

Enjoy Basic Training especially at Ft. Benning, training ground for infantry (grunts). So are you going in as 11B MOS?

Cool, congrats. I'd be right there too if they'd take my old ass.

Good luck.

I actually don't quite understand the entire process that would lead to my career. I think that I go in as 11x for basic, and then I will go to airborne school, and then different training for 18x.

Ummm... The Army is a bureaucracy. As such, no one will ever care as much about your career as you. Learn what you need to be doing, so if they mess up (as is wont to happen), you can call it out and fix things.

No what schools you need to finish, what prep work needs to be done, what classes you've already been scheduled for and make sure that those classes don't overlap with others. Then, go to that training and rock it.

Here's a little story I got in my e-mail for you Nate.

Quote:
Letter home from a Farm Kid In the Army

IDAHO FARM KID
(NOW AT an Army RECRUIT TRAINING center)

Dear Ma and Pa,

I am well. Hope you are. Tell Brother Walt and Brother Elmer the Army beats working for old man Minch by a mile. Tell them to join up quick before all of the places are filled.

I was restless at first because you got to stay in bed till nearly 6 a.m. But I am getting so I like to sleep late. Tell Walt and Elmer all you do before breakfast is smooth your cot, and shine some things. No hogs to slop, feed to pitch, mash to mix, wood to split, fire to lay. Practically nothing.

Men got to shave but it is not so bad, there's warm water. Breakfast is strong on trimmings like fruit juice, cereal, eggs, bacon, etc., but kind of weak on chops, potatoes, ham, steak, fried eggplant, pie and other regular food, but tell Walt and Elmer you can always sit by the two city boys that live on coffee. Their food, plus yours, holds you until noon when you get fed again. It's no wonder these city boys can't walk much.

We go on 'route marches,' which the platoon sergeant says are long walks to harden us. If he thinks so, it's not my place to tell him different.. A 'route march' is about as far as to our mailbox at home.

Then the city guys get sore feet and we all ride back in trucks. The sergeant is like a school teacher. He nags a lot. The Captain is like the school board. Majors and colonels just ride around and frown. They don't bother you none.

This next will kill Walt and Elmer with laughing. I keep getting medals for shooting. I don't know why. The bulls-eye is near as big as a chipmunk head and don't move, and it ain't shooting at you like the Higgett boys at home. All you got to do is lie there all comfortable and hit it. You don't even load your own cartridges. They come in boxes.

Then we have what they call hand-to-hand combat training. You get to wrestle with them city boys. I have to be real careful though, they break real easy. It ain't like fighting with that ole bull at home. I'm about the best they got in this except for that Tug Jordan from over in Silver Lake . I only beat him once. He joined up the same time as me, but I'm only 5'6' and 130 pounds and he's 6'8' and near 300 pounds dry.

Be sure to tell Walt and Elmer to hurry and join before other fellers get onto this setup and come stampeding in.

Your loving daughter,

Alice
