yes. i lost my job.

as some of you might have been aware, i worked for a company that developed, manufactured, and marketing various drivetrain components for medium and heavy-duty vehicles. obviously, this market is in the tank as even if people could get credit for new vehicles, fleet utilization is extremely low and no one is buying or making stuff to be transported so new trucks aren't in high demand.

until june, i had a great job as an account manager on our company's largest account. at that time we had another RIF (reduction in force) and my position on every account was eliminated. one of my colleagues lost her job, and the rest of us were asked to take different positions.

i was thankful for the position i was given because they told me that they had done it in order to keep me around even though they knew it wasn't ideal.

well, our company announced the merging of two divisions at the beginning of july and we all knew what that meant....RIF.

last tuesday our dept head asked me to cancel my travel plans and meet with him early thursday morning. i immediately knew what that meant and had to deal with knowing but not really knowing for a couple of days.

sure enough, i was brought into a meeting with HR and the manager and told that i was being let go. i was fairly prepared for it but it still really, REALLY sucked.

i got a pretty decent severance package and should be able to last for a few months without too much trouble.

i am now starting to work with the outplacement service they gave me. i'm cautiously optimistic but am obviously concerned about the current employment environment. there's virtually nothing out there in the industry i'm familiar with but since i don't especially want to stay in this industry, that's probably a good thing.

i'm starting to look for something new. i'm also trying to think deeply about whether or not this is an opportunity to change direction, both in terms of my career and my life. i want to make sure that i'm engaged in whatever activity God has planned for me and that i'm fulfilling my life's purpose, whatever that might be.

thanks for your support. i've posted a link to my resume below in case any of you are in a position to give me guidance or a reference. it's fairly specific but can be tailored to address whatever opportunity i'm looking at.

andy

I got the axe at the end of January, so I know what you're feeling. You're also, oddly enough, the only G|A poster I've met in person. Hang in there.

I've been looking for full-time employment for a couple months now. Job market is still bleak, but keep that head up. We can always start our Official Got|Apex? pole-dancing & golden shovel training business!

Economy sucks. It's been hurting a lot of jobs/industries. If you can't find your dream job, I hope you find something to carry you through to better times/opportunities.

A chance to try to reexamine where you want to be and what you want to be doing. Good luck with things!
I have endured being out for 11 months as well as being on strike for five months. Not easy or fun but somehow made it through. As talented as you are you will come out OK.

Can't you go back to school for (literally) free with some of the stimulus money for displaced workers?

I know a few friends who were laid off from their jobs are returning back to college for nothing out of pocket.

Might be something to look into.

You still have the Charger right?

If so, then it might be worth it... as a 4 door sedan that's nearly paid for.

Not having a large car payment would be a good thing considering the economics of your situation.

The job market is pretty good in the DC metro area but the housing prices are still pretty high. I hope you find a job soon...how about marketing?

Best of "luck" (personally, I trust in something, or rather, Someone much more than I do luck) in finding something better (and soon). I know what it's like as well.

Never a fun time at all, best of luck to you. I know when I lost my job back in 2000, it was a time full of mixed feelings. But I did ultimately decide it was for the better in the long run.

Or perhaps you could work as a "Happiness Consultant"? I saw something recently that they're popular now in Michigan
