I got a letter that says my mortgage was paid in full. Yay...wait..what? It was from a company I now longer pay my mortgage through but the account number is correct and it has my name. On the enclosed document is paperwork that has my account number written across the top but the property address is not mine and neither is the loan amount. Flipping through it's clear that this isn't mine at all and belongs to someone named George Brown. I've called the mortgage company but the automated phone system is interrupted by a guy voice saying they are experience problem and a hard good bye. Emails not returned. My research seems like the company went bellyup and send their mortgage to another bank. I tried calling that bank but no one is answering.
Somehow my old information got attached to this loan either by typo or they are reusing old account numbers. My google powers have failed me since neither bank is answering and I can't find a phone number for the person who owns this loan. Should I send snail mail to the owner, shred it and forget it or look for some government entity for help. I hope it's not ruining my credit.

If it is paid in full, it should not hurt your credit but since you are having troubles contacting the mortgage company the next step may be to contact Mr. Brown. He could have either paid off his loan or just refinanced and used that to pay off the old one and now has a new one with somebody else. Keep all copies of corespondence (or originals- better yet). Loans can be resold and repackaged with other loans and sold yet again so tracking down the actual holder could be difficult. This could be a simple mistake and easily corrected or it could become a long process to get sorted out. Good luck!

Solved!
I just read that the mortgage company just filed for bankruptcy today. Their phones are disconnected. So I called the new Lender and got a live person and talked to their mortgage person. Apparently I have the original note on his home. Good thing I didn't toss it. |
