Dell to close Winston-Salem, NC plant, lay off 905

ROUND ROCK, Texas (AP) - Dell Inc. said Wednesday it will close a desktop computer manufacturing plant in Winston-Salem, N.C., by the end of January.

The computer maker said 905 people will be laid off, with around 600 to be let go next month. The plant was opened in 2005.
In June, Dell sold its Lebanon, Tenn., remanufacturing plant to Genco. In January, Dell said the company would move its Ireland manufacturing operations to Poland, a process that is still ongoing.

Dell has plants in Miami, Nashville, Austin, Texas, Brazil, Ireland, Poland, China, Malaysia and India. It also partners with other manufacturers to make certain products.

Thought I read that Dell was changing its focus and moving away from manufacturing/ sales and more into the service side?

Holy crap, Dell is looking at buying Perot Systems? I didn't realize that.

That could be a really smart move if they handle it properly, but I worry that they may lose focus on their PC side & let it slip. If they focus too much on keeping up with HP (who just bought EDS), they could blow the whole thing, too. Fingers crossed - I like Dell & would like to see them succeed w/that.

They already announced a deal in the last week or two.

i remember when hp bought EDS. I had EDS stocks shares and they made me sell. there was no option to swap them for HP shares .only option was to pay a broker and buy HP shares after.

It's a plant for desktop computers. Probably makes sense to shutter it. My guess would be that the mix of computers they are producing is skewing further and further towards laptops and that it might not be economically feasible to refit the plant to laptop production. I don't think it's a matter of just shifting jobs overseas. However, there's nothing really wrong with that, either.

When Compaq bought DEC and HP bought Compaq, my DEC shares all ended up as HP shares (plus some buyout $$$ that I got paid as part of the deal).

With the cost of desktops & laptops almost the same these days, it makes sense to focus more on laptop & workstation production. Although I think I'd have a hard time giving up my desktop... I think I'll always have both
