Job search question

How do you deal with this situation: I am searching for a new job, but my current employer doesn't know, and I don't want her to know until I turn in my notice. I know there will be problems as soon as she finds out. I emailed my resume and immediately got a response back from the interviewer stating that he wants to meet with me right away, and asking if it's ok for him to call my references at this time. Does it reflect badly on me if I explain the situation? Should I just figure my boss is going to find out eventually that I am looking and deal with the harassment I will get from her?

IMO it does not reflect badly on you to ask that the recruiter make your one reference the last thing he/she checks, if they are otherwise prepared to make you an offer. A recruiter/interviewer understands as well as anyone the kind of Catch-22 you're in. That said, in the future try to find people who are more understanding of your need to move on, but who are senior enough to provide a meaningful, qualified recommendation. Much easier at large companies and after you've been in and out of different gigs. Your network will grow over time.

That is why the recruiter asked if it would be OK to check your references. You can say OK to everybody but your current employer if you want. They will understand that. Looking for a new job while you still have a job is a good move.

Absolutely OK to tell them that your current employer does not know you're looking. They'll understand & won't contact them for anything until/unless you give them the OK.

But in that case you also shouldn't list your current boss or co-workers as references (unless you trust them well enough to keeo their lips zipped about it).

I would list your current boss as a reference if you don't want them to be contacted. If you trust co-workers, then absolutely list them as a reference (I have done so in the past, without my direct supervisor knowing).
