Lightbulb Interest in an Investment Game?

Just thought that I'd see if anyone was interested in having a little gotapex investment game.

http://game.marketwatch.com (if you sign up, seems to take like 3 days to get approved for an account)

I thought that maybe we could have a month-long (or longer, if we want) game with $500,000 or so.

Anyone interested in this or have any thoughts?

Anyone interested should sign up at http://game.marketwatch.com It took me about four days for them to activate my account, so might want to sign up early. We can start in a week or so to give everyone time to sign up.

Perhaps we should create another user who's stocks will be picked by throwing darts?

Also, any ideas as to how long we want the game to go? A month? Maybe more?

I agree with everyone that this idea is great. Will be fun to get the competitive spirit going. I just signed up and my account was activated within minutes. As for the competition, I would say that we keep it to a month or two. Maybe something like Monday Jan 19 to Friday Mar 19. Everyone provide their thoughts and we can get this thing setup and going.

Thumbs up

Ok, here's what you need to do:

1) Go to http://game.marketwatch.com
2) Register
3) Once your account has been activated, click on "Competitions"
4) Click on "Find or create a VSE Competition"
5) Enter Competition ID "gotapex"
6) Click "Click Here" to join
7) Password is "gotapex"

I went with mostly the default options, with dates of 1/20-3/20. Let me know if any of the options don't seem right.

I'll be trying a different approach to my investing style, so I don't expect to outperform anybody. I figure this is a good way to try new things with fake money and if it goes well, perhaps I will incorporate it somehow into my personal investing strategy.

I think that I am going to do something similar...since it is less painful to do with fake money than the real stuff.

I think going the 19th through the 19th would make more sense....but that is only because they only allow things to start and end on regular open market days.

Don't forget that this begins on Tuesday, which is actually the first trading day of the week since the markets are closed on MLK day.

I was just looking at the people registered. I'm surprised the game lets you view somebody else's portfolio as well. Very interesting.

I think I can turn that off if someone's worried about it. You just want to steal my picks, don't you?

1 hour in and I'm already $4k in the hole. At this rate I'll lose all of my money in about a week! We're scoring this like golf, right?

It's a long 2 months. I'm done $1K and let me be the first to say that it does suck being on the west coast with the time difference and all.

Also, has anyone else noticed that the Marketwatch website is painfully slow?

Yes to both. Maybe in 2 months when this round is over if people want to do it again we can find another site. I'm assuming that there's another site that has the same sort of stuff for free.
