Where to invest.

My wife and I have reached a financial milestone and now we are looking to invest some cash on a monthly basis. We have just put a year of living expenses in bank and we want to take the money that we were putting towards that into some sort of investment for the future.

This is where we are now.
-401K maxed contributions
-We contribute a decent amount each month to a plan developed by our financial advisor for retirement.
-We have a year of living expenses in easy to reach accounts, please between a straight money market account, a saving account and 5 year cd's that I can get out of at any time.
-We have no outstanding debt besides our mortgage and the bill for my bigscreen which is financed for a year at 0 interest.

As I said I would like to invest the money we have been putting to other places over the last year. These funds will not be calculated towards retirement as we are already on course to achieve our goals there.

Basically I am looking to build wealth in the mid term (5-10 years) and I want the flexibility to dip into these funds if needed (new car vacations etc....)

I have been thinking of an index stock but I am open to suggestions.

Any ideas?

Congradulations, it sounds like you currently have all your ducks pretty much in a row. The real question is what is your current risk appetite? From the sound of it you already have most of your bases covered and an indexed mutual fund might fit the bill. Although you sound as though you are in a position where being a little more aggressive could serve you well. Maybe something sector specific. If you do go for a fund I would suggest that you ensure that there is considerable international exposure.

One quick question...I know you said your retirement was on track but do you use IRA's? If not then this might be an efficient tool for you to look into.

And it sounds like your advisor is doing a fine job.
