The term "blue chip" generally referrs to the large, highly recognizable, and highly respected companies. Names like General Electric, Microsoft, Wal-Mart, Wells Fargo, and the like. Just think of the most premium names out there. Whether or not they are good investments is another story altogether.

Not really. Fortune 500 generally referrs to size. Blue Chipa are large so they will be in the 500 but thet are also the ones that are precieved to be higher quality. Not the ones in low growth areas and not the ones going through a restructuring.

Stock of a large, national company with a solid record of stable earnings and/or dividend growth and a reputation for high quality management and/or products. More generally, anything of very high quality.

No, there is no official list. It kind of depends on your point of view. Kind of like saying "who are the best golfers?" Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

The Dow companies are a good start. Certainly not a complete list (there isn't one due to the subjective nature of the definition), but the Dow consists of what most people would call the blue chip stocks.
