what's the typical promotional raise?

I just got promoted (YAY, i've been waiting for this for months!), and I'm curious to know if my raise is better then average or not. It seems huge to me, but then, I've never been promoted before. What's the typical % for a promotional raise?

First off . . . many congratulations on the promotion!

There's no such thing as "typical" with raises . . . it depends on so many factors.

In the two times I've been promoted, my raises have been 15% and 45% . . . both with the same company.

congrats!
depends on what your promotion is about. are you getting promoted - strictly title? does your job description change at all? significantly?

also, what industry are you in?
what field are you in?

all those are factors.

i'm in IT, in finance. job description didn't change. i got 9%.

Congratulations on the promotion Missy!

As attgig mentioned, the % increase highly depends on your industry, new title (if any), and new responsibilities (if any).

The % increase will also depend on whether it was merit-based, tenure-based, and/or threat-based. For example, my % increase when I threatened to quit NBCU right after the merger-occured got me a 30% raise and a title promotion. I would have to say that on average from speaking with my former colleagues, it was more reasonable to see 10% - 15% when your title changes 1 level. As you gain more experience and reach higher levels of management structure, that % increase will most likely go up a bit and you will see extra compensation such as signing-bonuses and stock options.

neat, thanks for the feedback! Pretty much, I went from level 1 to level 2 in the same job, essentially doing the same work, just more senior then an entry level minion. I was already doing more then someone of minion-level should be doing, so I was curious to know if there was some extra merit raise in there. sounds like I did. yay!
