what to do if you're pay rate is wrong?

At my current job and status, my pay rate is based on what year i am in professional school...3rd year students get paid more than 2nd year students and so on and so forth.

i believe that the coding my have been inputed incorrectly resulting in the system thinking that i'm a 3rd year student and not a 2nd year student (which i am)....resulting in me being paid more than i should be.

here's my question, my pay rate is updated each year by the district supervisor...if in fact that my status is incorrect should i mention it now? or not mention it at all? it's a $2/hour difference in pay rates which is fairly notable...would i be held liable if i noticed this difference and not mentioned it?

my fear is that next year when the district sup. goes to update me again next summer they'll notice that i've been overpaid for a whole year and then i'll be in deep poo poo ca ca.

i'm only asking because i've been updated in the system two pay periods in a row, and currently the computer thinks i'm one year grade higher...i won't know for sure until i get paid (which is this week)...

what would you guys do?

p.s. i should mention that this is the company that i'm planning to work for after i graduate so there is no "dine and ditch" attitude availble

May I ask how much more are you getting per hour as a result of the error?
That will help in making the decision...

And on a side note, are individuals responsible for ensuring their employee status is accurate?

Considering you're still a student, I'll assume you work 20 hours a week. That's an extra $40/wk (= $160/mo = $1920/yr). And that's BEFORE taxes....

I'm not sure what your major is, but most of the time "professional degrees" result in high salaries after school. (One of the very few exceptions being my profession, architecture.... )

I'm not sure how much your salary already is, but I'm thinking if there's any possibility that you will be liable for the error, and if that may jeopardize at all your employment opportunities after graduation, it's not really worth it.

But then again, any money is a LOT of money for a student!!

I'd definitely tell them. Of course, I tend to be honest to a fault. But, I do think it is the best policy and will be rewarded in some way - even if it is only by the respect of the people who know you were honest about it.

Damn that was syrupy.

I once got an extra 50/month over 3 years. They found out but I didn't have to pay it back.

You definitely need to tell them about it asap. Ethically and morally it is the right thing to do. I know all too well that as a student every bit helps, but you shouldn't sell out your honor because of it. Right now in addition to your education that is probably the best thing you have and if you come forward it will show well.

yea, that "every lil bit helps" is really biting at the truth....but at either rate i've prepared and i'm not poor...i'm just college student poor...

it's the whole coming back to haunt me in the future that i'm concerned about...i'm just waiting for my paycheck to verify my rate...then i'll go from there...

I think the key here is that you intend on working for this company after you graduate. Here I see are advantages of you telling them about this:

1. You show honesty and integrity by coming forth about it.
2. You show that you care about the well-being of the company even at the expense of your financial situation.
3. There's good potential that this oversight won't be corrected retroactively, resulting in a net profit for you.

I'd say tell 'em. If you'd like to continue to work there it's a small step back to take a leap forward when you get hired full-time.

Ethically speaking, you should notify the payroll department so they can fix it. Something like this may come back and bite you in the ass.

i got my stub...and yea, the pay was increase...officially to 17/hr...

well, due to some unrelated issues the district supervisor was here today at work...and since she's the one who handles my pay (since i'm coded a student rather than just a "regular") i brought the issue to her attention...according to her she said that sounded right and that there was an increase to all the students...so as far as i'm concerned i've brought it to the attention of those responsible and i'm all clear....yea i'm getting closer and closer to the big bucks!!!

wow, everyone here is so honest! i wouldn't tell them if they brought it up, i would justs say "oh, i had no idea, i never even really look at my pay stub."

and i'm sure they wouldn't make you pay it back. that is too much effort for them.

If something like this happened to me I would mention it to my boss only...not the payroll dept. Why? Well the payroll folks WILL adjust it back down. It is their job and they don't want to make those kind of mistakes. You boss on the other hand might just say to enjoy it. Boss, especially in a big company, wants to keep his people happy while payroll couldn't care less.

I had a friend who was working for IT at Kaiser and then got a job elsewhere. For a while Kaiser never took him off payroll so he was getting two paychecks even though he worked only at one place. He was making 70k at the new job and had an income of about 50k at kaiser. I told him to stop that immediately. He did.
