Which kinds of car insurances do you pay for?

Two questions. Is there any reason not to go for the $1000 deductable? And this one's more tricky: what about uninsured motorist. Won't my health insurance cover me? How about comprehensive? The insurance company has to make money off this so it makes sense that in the long run you're better off without it right?

I remember in my girlfriends case, to go for a lower deductible (in her case, from $500 to $250), cost like $2/month. So, in her case, as long as she got into an accident every 10 years, it made sense.

I currently have a $500 deductable because the cost difference between $500 and $1000 wasn't very much. The difference between $250 and $500 was significant, though.

Interesting. I quit writing the thread and decided not to post it half way into the poll. I guess you can't quit that late. I'll edit the question.

Hah! So we're betting against ourselves? I don't really plan on getting into an at fault accident in the next 10 years.

trust me you want uninsured motorist. If I had it when my cutlass was hit I could've fixed it, they give your around 3500 for the whole deal.

Sometimes although you're not at fault, the other guy can claim that in fact you are. Get the uninsured motorist coverage...I got hit by someone who gave me all their insurance info but it turned out she stopped paying her car insurance 2 months before. Also get the rental coverage IMO...it cost like 50 bucks more but if your car is ever in the shop for more than 2 days which in my cases it was for 2 weeks, it pays for itself. M

My deductible is 250 for collision and 200 for comp.

Like I've said before. Long run.. the insurance company is going to get you. You have to add up how much uninsured motorist payments would add up over the time period to really make the math work.

Rental coverage? $50 per.... You mean if you're in the shop for more than two days every 6 months?

All it takes is one big accident whether it was your fault or not and you will wish you had all of those coverages. I say better safe then sorry. You are trying to save pennies when it is going to cost you dimes if you ever have a significant accident. You may be plannig on never having an accident but what about the other million or so drivers on the roads who don't give a sh*t whether you have insurance or not. They don't , so they don't care what happens.....and their driving proves it.

Well... replacing my car is an acceptable risk. If I get into a big accident and they don't have enough coverage... I'll buy another car tapping into the savings I made from not having to pay UIM. The insurance company knows what the risk is of an uninsured motorist hitting me. It's not save nickles pay dimes. It's save a penny each year for 10 years but pay 9.9 pennies at the end of the year.

Tapping into the savings.... Thats assuming every dollar you are saving you put away for this very fact. Maybe you are stricter than I am but when I have tried to do this in other situationos it just doesn't work. Better safe than sorry.

You're exactly right. Insurance companies make big money by playing the odds, just like casinos.

However, if you're the unlucky guy who gets hit and has your car totalled and $300k of medical bills, you beat the insurance company.

Strange thing, insurance. Basically, you're betting something bad will happen to you.

But medical insurance would cover my medical bills. You haven't beat anyone.
