What would you do under these circumstances?

As many of you know, I took the Florida Bar exam in preparation of moving back to Florida from California. While I am waiting for my results, I have started to try to find a job there. Unfortunately, I am in a bit of a conundrum and I am unsure of what the best way to handle this will be.

Basically, my wife wishes to stay with her company and transfer to one of their Florida offices which for all intensive purposes we have limited to either the Orlando or Melbourne offices. (There are others, but not anywhere we would want to be) She has not spoken with her boss yet because she wanted to wait until her raise and any promotion had gone through. Given the fact that the move would theoretically lose her "time in" waiting until it was locked was the only sensible thing to do. However, because of her waiting we have no clue how a possible transfer would work. We are hoping that her company will pay for the move as this is something they usually include in transfers, but given that we are initiating it, I think we may be dreaming in technicolor on that one. Our lease also doesnt expire until the end of July, so we have another flag on the play in terms of an immediate full move.

All that aside, my wife and I would like for me to immediately get a position in Florida. This way, we are guaranteed that it wont be a bad move.

Unfortunately, until we know for a fact that my wife is going to transfer, and to which of the 2 locations she would transfer to, I am sort of shooting into the dark. The majority of my family, friends, and contacts are all down in South Florida. As such, if my wife is unable to transfer we would probably want to live closer to that neck of the woods. Additionally, I have places that I can stay there and people who will help out with getting settled.

This begs the question of where I should start looking for a job. Obviously, I can start looking by my family and friends as there is a support structure there to help me out. I am also looking for positions in Melboune, as that is the most likely transfer spot (in my head)...but I can also look in Orlando.

I feel like no matter which place I go for, I am going to end up getting screwed. If I get a great job but its 3 hours away from my wife's, thats going to suck. It would mean that we would have to get 2 separate places to live and only see each other on weekends until 1 of us either quits/gets a position by the other. If I take a position in one of the cities that she might transfer to and she ends up not transfering there, we run into the same problem except magnified by the fact that we are down to 1 salary and in a town that was chosen for us.

At this point, I am looking for positions in all 3 areas, but focusing on the 1 location where I think she is most likely to transfer. What would everyone here do?

TIA.

I guess it depends on how big the raise was, but I'd probably have your wife talk to her boss. That's really the problem, right? If you think that her boss likes her enough to help her transfer, then I would guess that (s)he isn't going to do anything sneaky to circumvent the raise.

Even if her boss does, it sounds like it would be better to not get the raise and know than for you to be out of work for a couple of months looking for a job in an area you didn't expect.
