what do i do??? any help is appreciated.
Hi everyone,
I have a dilemna. I am now 26 years old and been working with the same company for 10 years. I have a bachelor's degree in management. The problem is I am tired of my job. 60 plus hours making 50,000 a year. I have only had one job my whole life which makes it difficult to find another one. I am currently going back to school for my mba. The question is I will not be done with school for 3 more years. So, do I look for another job now or stay where I am at? I get 4 weeks paid vacation a year but it's horrible and i think i could be making more money. I am worried that I will never be hired because i only have one job. Also is it worth it in today's world to get an MBA? Any help, comments , or questions are appreciated. Thanks |

Your vacation time is nice. Most people only get 2-3 weeks. Does your company pay for your schooling? That should be a factor. It would also help if you describe what you do.

what type of work do you do? im sure you have learned a great amount in 10 yrs. and that you would have an awsome skill set. That in itself is worth something. I dont think you have much to worry about. Go back to school if you get tired of work. Think of it as a way out of the "work world." and get shcool out of the way before you get married.
but heck..what do i know...im only 24 and ive been working for just 2 yrs. |

I think most places look at years of experience, and care less about if it was all at one place or across several jobs. Particularly if you can show that you had more responsibility as time went on.

What field are you in? Are they paying for your continued education? How likely is it for you to get a promotion soon. Honestly, youve been there since you were 16, maybe they dont appreciate the work you do. After all they are only paying you $16 an hour considering the amount of hours you work. You have to make things happen for yourself! Go in there and talk to the man in charge and ask him if he wants you to stay!
As for the MBA... what field are you in, what field do you want to be in? Are you enjoying going back to school? Is it affordable to you?

I have found that ANY extra schooling will be beneficial for you, but most likely will not result in an increase in salary until you go elsewhere.
Why not go and discuss your feeling with your boss. If you do it the right way, he/she may not realize your problem and have something lese for you to do that is more to your liking. |

nothing is worth working 60 hours/week imho. at least not for extended periods of time.

1. what do you do?
2. where are you going to school? 3. will they give you a raise if you leave? education is always good. I got my mba from a small school because my ba didn't work in finance. as a result of never settling I now make 2.5x my salary 2.5 years ago. I work 50 or so a week with 3wk vacation, but awesome other benefits. |

I hope you're not a manager at a fast food place because with that kind of experience you should making more money elsewhere. An MBA will defintely help you in your job search and salary IMO. Depending on where you live you can make a significant amount.

maybe. he's only 26 and has been working at this place since he was 16. so i'm guessing a lot of it wouldn't count as professional experience.
and 50k isn't too bad in the midwest if he's not getting overtime. |

It's with Walgreens and i started as a stockboy, been an assistant and now an executive asst manager over the 10 years. Also if i stay with the company i guess i could go to corporate, I am married with one child, would eventually move near to deerfield where corporate is. right now it's a 2 hour drive one way. I am going to school for my mba with a concentration in finance but don't know if i should stick with finance or switch to something else. Thanks for all your replies everyone.

They do not pay for my schooling so it's all up to me. They can care less if someone leaves the job. i probably would not get promoted to store manager for another 2-3 years realistically. thanks
that's for overnight manager's, cheapie. I am a daytime manager so it's every week, either 5 or 6 days a week. Last edited by dtdnick1029 : 03-28-2006 at 08:50 AM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost |

Try now... After youre with a new company for a little while, they may even pay for your continued education. You can even ask in the interview, its an ok question to ask (it makes them see you want to further yourself)

I know that Walgreens promotes into corporate from within, so your chances of getting in there with an MBA are good. however, what do you want to do with your finance degree? i couldn't see myself doing corporate finance, so I kept trying at investments. I am doing a hybrid right now in treasury, but hope to switch over. Do yourself a huge favor, do not settle. |
