What do you say to your co-workers in this situation?
i've been trying to find out if we have any of the broadband sprint cards in stock at work to use for a month or so. we have a lady whose job it is to provide us with cells and modem cards and she hasn't responded yet. i see her all of the time working out, talking, working, etc. i've left her emails and voicemails explaining why i needed it and underscoring the urgency.
i want to leave a message saying the following: "hey ****, i know you're busy and all, but answering this question is your job. i am your customer and if you don't respond asap, it will get ugly. you are pissing off a person that is on the company's largest effing account and your are affecting my occupation. and, if i may be blunt, i know you don't like your little piss-ant job but while you have it, DO IT EFFECTIVELY and you might be able to eventually move on!!! call me back or i'll make sure you're doing something you enjoy even less!" but of course i can't say that. i have to act professional and act like i respect her and that i am waiting patiently for an answer.

Just stand over her shoulder until she acknowledges you.

Showing up in person usually gets results... if not, go to her superiors and ask.
Colt 45....Works everytime...

Show up in person and either CC or BCC her bosses.

Being very nice in person should at least shame her into doing her job.

Yup - that's what I always do. A CC to the boss usually does the trick, sometimes followed up with a note ONLY addressed to the boss stressing the urgency. I'd guess that she doesn't have any available & her boss told her not to order any more. Rather than telling you the bad news, she's probably hoping you'll forget about it. Ask her directly - be polite & act like she's doing you a HUGE favor and I bet you see a card quickly. Couple of tips for anyone in this situation (since being in IT, I'm usually the guy passing out new equipment): 1) Plan for what you need in advance. Want a new laptop or other expensive equipment next year? Make the request in Aug-Sept of the prior year when they're working on the budget. 2) Find out who does the equipment ordering for your company. Become buddies with them. People CAN be bought - you'd be amazed what I can get out of people for a box of donughts or some trinkets from a trade show. 3) If you need something unexpectedly, come up with a business need, even if it's a lie. "I need a flat panel monitor because my doctor says the CRT I have is causing my eyes to strain after a few hours" This will get you a shiny new LCD. "I need a flat screen monitor." "Why?" "Because Joe and Mary both have one." This will get you an amused look and a brush off. 4) No one cares how important you are to the company, unless you are in their direct chain of command. Because you're working on the company's biggest account means squat to the purchasing people. Why? They don't get any commission. |

I agree with sending another email request and CCing your boss on it. If you still get ignored, follow up with your boss and if it is keeping you from performing your job effectively, he should take it and run with it.

it would come out of my budget so she's not worried about the cost. i need to stop down and just stand there and ask.

Yeah, the CC to her manager can be effective, yet somewhat subtle. Beyond that, the "Hi, I've contacted you about this and I need it NOW" in-person ice-breaker will get things rolling.

I usually forward my original e-mail to the person and add something like:
"I sent you this e-mail <insert time frame here> but since I have not received a response from you then you must not have received the e-mail. Please see my original e-mail below and reply back to me as soon as possible. Thanks, Your mutha effin' worst nightmare" ![]() Or I would just stop by and see the person. If the e-mail or the stop by doesn't light a fire under their butt then go to their manager or yours. |

Respond to one of your initial emails, and this time cc YOUR boss and HER boss. If that doesn't get her attention, then your boss can just go straight to her boss and get the answer for you.
