"best" is only a finanacial evaluation, and an incomplete one, at that... they don't even factor in hours worked, which is HUGE (in fact, i'd say without it, this ranking is utterly worthless), let alone other issues that are important to most people in deciding whether or not a job is "good"

How we picked the best jobs
We started with growing fields...and then started cutting.
April 12, 2006: 10:03 AM EDT

NEW YORK (MONEY) - To find the best jobs in America, MONEY Magazine and Salary.com, a leading provider of employee compensation data and software, began by assembling a list of positions that the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects will grow at an above-average rate over 10 years and that require at least a bachelor's degree.

Using Salary.com compensation data, we eliminated jobs with average pay below $50,000; total employment of less than 15,000; dangerous work environments; or fewer than 800 annual job openings, including both new and replacement positions.

Next we rated positions by stress levels, flexibility in hours and working environment, creativity, and how easy it is to enter and advance in the field.

We then ranked the jobs, giving double weight to compensation and percentage growth. Data for the top 50 appear here. Any job that fell in the bottom third of two job-satisfaction categories, or in the pay or growth category, was removed from consideration for the top 10.

ahhh... cool. much more complete than the 4 criteria in the OP... i get it; i read that to mean those were the only factors they were taking into account.

in that case, i'm very surprised by some of the ranks. like, writer? i mean, seriously? that's like putting actor on the list... 99% of them basically fail. they must only be counting the ones with actual steady employment... and the growth they list? publishing is tight, and it's been getting tighter every year for the last 5+ years. they must be counting a bunch of ad execs and food-box-copy writers...

medical scientist? maybe they need to be more specific, and they're only counting a certain subset of medical scientists, because that can be an enormously malignant professional environment, and a huge number of the people in it are paid slave wages.

i'm surprised dentist is so low, since the avg dentist works 35 hours a week for that 122,000, is self-empoyed and has very little in the way of HMO headaches compared to doctors,,, and i'm even more surprised that dental hygienist didn't make the list at all... in demand, and that's got to be more rewarding, fewer hours, and much lower stress than, say, "property manager." same for dental assistant, except the pay would be much lower.

interesting, interesting...

Hehe. After seeing my job on the "worst paid jobs" list, I wasn't really expecting it to see it here. Anyway, it's a labour of love. I would be doing something else if it were only about the money.

Some of the wages are way off. And "engineer" is too broad of a category.

Yeah I only wish I made the salary that is posted for my job. I think the people in those high price cities are throwing off the numbers. Yeah they make more but if you live in NYC at some of those salaries, you would be poor.

Way off b/c a civil engineer makes way less than an electrical engineer, on average.

Also, what the heck is a sales engineer?

I didn't really see civil engineer on the list. Where are you looking? Maybe they are predicting some change in the supply and demand.

I was thinking the same thing. "Writer" is so generic. Novelist? Journalist? Pornographer? What type of writers are they referring to? I'd love to be a writer and making $67k...I write in my spare time. I could do that and my regular job and be bankin'!
