You can format it to work on either system.

A great website for iPod tips is www.ipodlounge.com.

Just a note on the windows/mac compatibility, it was the gen 2 that was peculiar in that a windows 'pod could be converted to a mac but a mac gen 2 'pod couldn't be converted to windows. Gen 2 iPods are the first breed of iPods that became windows compatible and still featured the buttons around the wheel but the wheel was a touch sensitive one by then. The iPod up for sale here is a gen 3 which as sjshaw stated can be transformed back and forth.

As a note for a good tip imo, if you use macs and windows, format your gen3 or newer pod for windows with fat32. You can then have the ipod be recognized on both systems. This is how I use it currently, my main machine is a mac, but I can still use it as a hard drive on windows. Only downside to this is that you can no longer use the ipod to boot an os on macs, but uhm, I never did that so not a biggie for me.
