Take this!
2345435 34555555555553536754756756245698347345345345198416594619/1616846168191681681412945717267454621651 BWAH HA HA! Seriously though, you need to do some homework first. Ya, I have a few POSs that won't play modern games I could sell ya... Anyway, if you are looking for lower-end used stuff, check out www.computer-show.com. If you want newer, your best bet is to buy new from dell-get the stripped down comps from the deals page. They are much better deals than you would get on a used computer that you would want to own.

i am talking with one fellow about building one. he says it is best way to learn about the CPU and its workings. any input on a really good video card and hard drive would be helpful. what makes a game work faster on a PC? |

Try starting a thread in the Hardware section. You will get more help over there on building a system. Do you have a budget for your computer? Do you prefer AMD or Intel? Do you want to use the same motherboard you have (if your system is slow, you probably need a new one of that too) and then probably new memory and a video card. Everything was probably at the same level of technology, so if you want faster, you probably need new everything- except mouse, keyboard, and monitor. You might be able to use the same case, but will likely need a better power supply to drive your new components.

AMD and Intel are the manufactures of CPU (which is da brain of the computer)
If you are into Gaming go with the AMD 64 *~* Waking up Intel Mad Dogs << LOL *~* I personally would suggest going with an AMD 64 processor, Socket 939 motherboard, PCI express video card, S-ata Hard Drive, DVd burner Open a thread in the hardware forum and the MOST important think, post how much you want to spend.. |

Refer to it as building a rig or computer, not a cpu.
A cpu is just part of the computer, the one with the speed people talk about, like 2 gigahertz (GHz) or 800 megahertz (MHz). AMD and Intel make cpu's (processors). AMD is cheaper and I personally think they are better for gaming.
