Unhappy Anyone ever have to send in a broken PS2 to Sony for repair?

After having my PS2 for 4 years now it has crapped out on me and no longer reads any type of disc. All it does when powered on is stay at the browser screen and the cd-rom just makes a clicking noise.

I've read quite a few websites that suggested I needed to re-adjust my laser by opening up my PS2 (thus having to remove the warranty sticker although my warranty has long since expired) and changing the position of the white gear located behind the laser (as shown here)

After tearing apart my PS2 and trying several gear adjustments, it still isn't working. Even though my warranty sticker has been removed, I have read that Sony will fix it for free as long as I pay for shipping. Is there any truth to this claim, or do any of you have any additional troubleshooting advice?

Thanks very much.

There's very much truth to this claim...but make sure you put everything back together PERFECTLY and make sure you didn't break anything or completely **** anything up inside or else they will send it back to you without fixing it. I have had two friends do this with their playstations (sony repairing them for free) after theirs stopped reading discs.

I bought a PS2 on launch day. It broke about a year later, same problem that you have. Sony told me they would repair it for $175. I laughed, hung up and bought an X-box.
