Online Gaming
What game got you into playing games online? I'm just curious to see which game influenced your gaming habits. Mechwarrior 2/Netmech got me into online gaming years ago. The leagues and units made it worthwhile for years.

The first online game I really got into was a MUD called Arcane Nites, about 6 years ago. I got into it because my friends played it too, and it was pretty addictive building my character and collecting items.

First 2 online games were these 2 MUDs Ancient Anguish and Carrion Fields. Those 2 MUDs showed me about PvE (AA) and PKing with guilds (CF). I suck at PKilling.

Diablo was the first online game. However I started multiplayer with Doom networking 2 computers together through the parallel port.

Played DOOM (1) in the dorms in 1994. (Tried it on Kali later over a modem) then Marathon (on macs!) across campus. My destiny was pretty much set then...
School connection + infant internet + Mplayer and Kali = Bires doomed to a life of videogames

The last game I played online was Counterstrike and from then on I've not played an online game since. Btw if you don't know I'm a HUGE gamer. My problem is that a lot of the online people are these immature 13 year olds who think they are l33t and trashtalk. I don't think trashtalking is a lot of fun, nor do I find cheating any more exciting.
I don't play MMO games since I don't have the time while there are thousands who spend every waking moment in it. For me, I don't find it fun when I can't spend enough time on it playing (plus I don't want to pay $15 a month). I'm one of the few people who has avoided online gaming, and I know I'm generalizing and that the online experience is great. It's just for me, it's a huge chore that I rather not deal with right now. |

My first online game (and still my FAVORITE of all time) was SHOGO:MAD (Mobile Armored Divison)
Shogo was the coolest thing since being introduced to the internet. Pretty much Shogo convinced me to drop AOL (the best decision I ever made) and get a better local dial up ISP back in the day... so I could at least get a decent ping to the servers. Eventually I got a cable broadband connection to play Shogo even better... Pretty much I'd probably still be playing Shogo if the company Monolith hadn't stopped supporting it. Eventually, "cheaters" took over and made the game not fun... however the Shogo community eventually came up with some protected servers to keep the cheaters out... but by that time games like UT, UT2, Quake3, and other FPS had come out which drew me away from it. But still... Shogo has a special place in my heart. ![]()

I remember doing MUD's in 92 and BBS turn based games. But When Doom mods came out, I really was wowed. By the time Quake1 came out, we were gaming like crazy at UCLA. Had the T3 connection when most still ran 56K and tandem modems....

The first games I used to Play online were LORD, Usurper, Bordello, Trade Wars 2002, Barren Realms Elite, on old BBS' back in the early 90s (I'm thinking 93 maybe) Then I got into Diablo, and played that for a while, and Starcraft. Quake 3 arena, when I worked at ATVI, but that was it. I am mostly in agreeance with Gear's statements, I can't stand 98% of the people.

I'm with LPMiller on this one. BBS MUDs got me into playing games online regularly. Legend of the Red Dragon and Usurper were really great. I logged on everyday for those. As far as more modern games I'd say Counter-Strike.

My first online game was Trade Wars way back in the 80's on a couple local BBS' in the Sacramento area. After Al Gore put his initial finishing touches on the Internet, I got into Starcraft and Battlenet big time after that it was Quake 3 Area and Counter Strike, Homeworld, Homeworld Cataclysm and then Earth and Beyond (my first MMOG). I totally agree with Gear and Nija that 95% of the players out there are 15 years old or below and wouldn't know how to function in normal society. MMOG's are a bit different with a lot of older, more mature players (with some still-immature ones thrown in for balance). When Earth and Beyond was in its heyday, I even saw families playing online together (fathers and sons, sometimes even mothers too). Now that Earth and Beyond is closing down ( you EA!) I'm not playing anything at the moment, at least until WoW beta gets expanded.

My first experience was Command and Conquer on a LAN. Even now, I don't play many games but I have been known to play C&C Generals, and The Delta Force games online on occasion.
