Sony Announces PSP Specs

Reported by: David Laprad

Sony Computer Entertainment has announced the specifications for its PSP. The handheld video game system is scheduled to be launched in Japan at the end of 2004. North American and European launches will follow in the spring of 2005. PSP comes in a black color with a 16:9 widescreen TFT LCD display. The dimensions of the unit are 170mm x 74mm x 23mm with a weight of 260g. The PSP's LCD displays 16.77 million colors on a 480 x 272 pixel high-resolution screen. It also comes with built-in stereo speakers and exterior headphone connector as well as brightness control and sound mode selection. Keys and controls inherit the same operability as the PlayStation and PlayStation 2.

PSP also comes equipped with diverse input and output connectors such as USB 2.0 and 802.11b wireless LAN. Users will be able to play online or connect multiple PSPs directly via a wireless network. Software and data can be downloaded through a USB or wireless network onto a Memory Stick PRO Duo.

PSP adopts a small optical Universal Media Disc that stores games and other forms of digital entertainment content. The newly developed UMD is 60mm in diameter and can store up to 1.8GB of digital data. A copyright protection system has been developed that utilizes a combination of a unique disc ID and 128-bit AES encryption keys for the media as well as an individual ID for each unit.

I think it'll do good but that depends on the price. It might be a turbo-graphix bomb. That thing was very expensive for the time. I doubt it'll go the Atari Lynx route which I think lacked a good library of titles.

i think you all are full of crap.

Seriously, it really depends on the games on each system. Remember when everyone thought the GBA SP was stupid? Turns out it was a great machine, but only because the games on it were pretty good (wario ware, all the super marios, Final Fantasy Tactics, Advance Wars, etc.)

Really, at this point it's all posturing ("mine is larger than yours", "I can render 2.5 mil polys, yours can only do 2 mil", etc.) Wait until the games come out.

I've read that Koei is developing Dynasty Warriors for the DS. That's interesting.

Btw I've also read that the DS has the power of the N64. Does that mean Zelda ports and Mario 64 are coming to the DS?

Well the big advantage with GBA SP was it was backlit. A major complaint of the Gameboy Advance which I had and installed the Afterburner to correct it. Now that I see a picture of the DS...I think the PSP is better style wise. The DS does bring up some interesting game possibilities that probably have been mentioned before.

EA PSP games:

Electronic Arts will ship four titles day and date with the PSP launch: NBA Street and NFL Street as well as Tiger Woods PGA Tour Golf and Need for Speed Underground. Each will be customized for the new system. An additional 10 to 12 titles will follow within the first year of launch. Over 100 people within EA development studios are working on PSP games drawn from the publisher's stable of franchises.

14-16 titles the first year? That's it?

Ok, to beat an entrenched foe, one must these two things:

1) Competitives Price. Nothing I'm hearing about the PSP suggests it will be cheap.
2) At least 1 killer launch title. Sorry, Golf ain't it.

Atari Lynx bomb on both, despite it's tech. Game Gear bomb at first with games, then on price. Turbo grafix was mostly due to price. Sega Nomad was price and lack of any kind of marketing push.

The hardcore gamer has never driven the handheld market. Parents and students have. That's why you need a low price, and a good library. The DS will have a huge one built in, with it's ability to play GBA games. It will also have the brand recognition of being a Nintendo gameboy. It's only real weakness is going to be the young age of the SP.

Sony might be trying to do too much with their unit. I wouldn't launch with less then 8 games, and I sure as heck wouldn't make them all sports titles. You need 1 killer puzzle game, 1 killer RPG, 1 killer action game, at least.

I dunno, I see Sony making some classic mistakes here, cool tech or no.

Then again, Nintendo could be suiciding on the DS. The DS games better be darn good to get people to put down those not-so-old GBA SPs they bought and throw down for a new system.

They might be banking on GBA owners who didn't go to the SP getting one. It'll be interesting.

For sure Nintendo will put out another Zelda. If it's as good as the OG GB Zelda game, they'll be solid on that alone.
