Even if this came out on April 1st it still wouldn't be believable.

In other news, the PS3 will fold your laundry, potty train your dog, and fetch your morning paper, all with the power of 215 of Jeeves' Personal Butlers (R)!

I think I also remember reading somewhere that it will clean up the greenhouse gasses and fill the polar holes in the ozone layer.

I wonder how many points I have to accumulate on my Sony card to be able to redeem that.

Code-named "Cell," the new microchips will employ the world's most advanced research technologies and chip-making techniques, including copper wires, silicon-on-insulator (SOI) transistors and low-K dielectric insulation, with features smaller than 0.10 microns -- 1,000 times thinner than a human hair. The result will be consumer devices that are more powerful than IBM's Deep Blue supercomputer, operate at low power and access the broadband Internet at ultra high speeds. Cell will be designed to deliver "teraflops" of processing power.
Only .10 microns, and it's still in development?

The goal is to make new processor technology, called "grid" about 200x faster than current console technology. This is almost achieving their original goal of making the PS3 1000(!) times faster than the PS2.

Ya. It's my goal to evolve into a form of pure energy. I think my goal is more attainable by next summer.

How? And why? I'm not conceptualizing it. I'm hardly a comp sci guy here, but I can't imagine the benefits of distributed computing in a game where graphics and such would still have to be rendered in the individual console.

I still don't understand how they are going to distribute this power. Unless you have broadband and leave your PS3 on all the time, even when you're not playing, how's it going to work? And if you don't have broadband are you just out of luck, no PS3 for you?

And like ShawnLee said, the graphics would need to be rendered on the console itself, either that or it would need to collect and compile the raw processed data in real time to display on the monitor. I don't know of any home broadband service that can realistically handle that.

I know this has to be all hype, but you have to ask why would Sony hype thier next system so much that it's practically impossible to deploy in 3-5 years. I can only see one slightly positive outcome for Sony with this: the PS3 is deployed after MS and Nintendo have released thier next gen consoles and everyone wants to wait for Sonys "Cell" technology. But even that could backfire if MS or Nintendo put out a better product.

i dunno all that sounds like crap to me. I would just wait till i hear something from sony.

I know they are developing a "cell" processor, but all those specs and everythign about the networking... just doesn't add up

" a recent report (May 5 2002) from the Japanese News Agency Kyodo said that the Playstation 3 would work over superfast fiber optics connections and would be Sony's first console to run games without a digital video disc."

cause you know lots of people just have their houses and everything wired with fiber...

The cube has been a bust, and I expect that to continue with the next one, but Nintendo's always put out quality handhelds. The DS should at very least compete nicely with Sony's upcoming PSP. And yeah a smaller more powerful XBOX? Sign me up.

That said, I don't know if Sony would actually want to launch their PS3 later than the other two companies' systems. It's my opinion that starting out of the gates later just gives the other guys a head start. The PS2 grabbed a huge fan base before the XBOX hit shelves, if I'm not mistaken. The XBOX is just now beginning to catch up (recently outselling the PS2), and it's pretty late in the game. Granted, the PS2's extensive game library helped them to hold onto the lead for so long, but I don't think releasing later is always best.
