So I've been playing City of Heroes...

And boy do I like it a lot!!! It's a whole lot of fun! I just like the idea of being a superhero and being able to create what I want this superhero to look like and what his/her powers are going to be. Good times....good times...

Cool. A couple of my friends play and enjoy it too... I'm thinking about picking it up myself, if I'm able to get a summer job. Is it frustrating that certain character builds (Assault/Devices Blaster for example) do obscene amounts of damage compared to other builds that might be more fun? And for a first character (that will probably be used just to learn on and then get junked) what do you recommend?

no PvP yet...

you only go on missions to fight other computer villains.

plus there's nothing to do BUT to kill the enemies.

A first character to learn on would be a blaster w/ fire as primary and secondary. It's very easy to lvl in that.

PvP is coming soon...they are making City of Villans.

Fire/Fire blaster? I'll consider that. After talking to my friends about it, I'm thinking about doing a Stone/Invulnerability tanker, because they don't have a tanker yet. But we'll see. Besides, if Stone/Inv is my keeper character the Fire/Fire could be the initial experimentation guy...

And yes PvP will be implemented with City of Villains... that should make things very interesting. Dark Age of Camelot's realm vs realm wars were pretty crazy, so I imagine heroes vs villains should be good.

No, because while they do great gobs of damage, they die if you look at them funny.

The balance of the character classes is pretty damn tight, considering you can really open up what kind of powers you have based on the 'bonus powers' of super jump, flight, super speed, etc.

My Controller is great at crowd control, but dies pretty easy and does crap for damage. But between super jump and super speed, I can run away when I need to.

That's way true.... The blaster really doesn't have many hitpoints....but I've kept my dying to a minimum.

And now I'm a lvl 12 fire/fire blaster....I deal out pretty good dmg.

Wait till you get to 20. My fire/fireblaster friend hasn't been out of XP debt since 16 or so. He just draws way too much agro with his powers. They are fun though, but boy, you sure eat dirt a lot.

I got about 4 guys in CoH on pinnacle. Its fun, gets a little boring once you hit 15ish, the game doens't have a lot of depth though. I stopped playing once I got into WoW beta...

lol! I just keep my distance from the enemies....unless they are around 3 lvls below me. Like in perez park, I would go into the middle of like 10-15 guys that were around that much below me and then kick their butts...and I would get some good exp too! I let my teammates shoot first so that the higher lvl enemies don't all go for me at once....I was the first to shoot sometimes....that was a bad thing.

Tried invulnerability/stone tanker... let me just say don't go tanker for your first character. It's really pretty boring to learn on, especially if you're tanker-minded (defense before damage). I got to a whopping level 6 before tiring of it. Edit: it probably didn't help that I was going solo at first, as a character with no range, poor attack speed, and poor accuracy.

Made an energy/energy blaster, which so far suits me pretty well. Great solo damage, and can contribute (damage) in groups. Just got sniper shot at level 8, pretty awesome. I'm loving hasten (super speed pool); it works wonders with build up (a +dmg +acc click skill) and my shooting powers. Having much more fun with this guy than the other.

Infinity server...
Moe Mentum (lvl 8 energy/energy blaster)
Rawkstar (lvl 6 invulnerability/stone tanker)

Are there different servers for this game? or is everyone in one massive server free for all?

There's 10 different servers (so if you have friends that play on a server find out which before you start playing)... you can have 8 characters per account per server (and yes you can delete a character if you really want to).

No capes still. Maybe they'll implement it in a later patch. And I think I was wrong about the 10 servers thing; there's 11.

This is one game I'm seriously avoiding. Sounds way too addictive.

It is addicting when you start, but once you get higher up it stops. So you create a new charc and repeat the process .

yeah i play with grubbie on pinacle... it was addicitng at first. But there isn't much to do besides kill guys. It is simple and easy to learn, but basically you take a mission. Either go kill X amount of guys, or go to a building and kill all the guys in there. Rinse, repeat. it is just repetitive. I really like the graphics and the char design and the powers and all though.
The game itself is just lacking things to do. Something to tide me over till WoW though.

I have a lvl 24 Ice/Devices Blaster as my main char.

Wow wont' be different. At the heart of all these games, you just go and kill things. CoH lacks crafting, but I've never in my life understood why anyone would spend real money to make fake wood shields for fake money.

Trust me WoW IS DIFFERENT. You can play CoH all you want, but the depth isn't there. You gain levels, then you add slots to yoru attacks and you get new attacks or powers ever 2 levels. You go around killing bad guys and while you are doing that you are buildilng up influence which allows you to add things to your powers(damn, lower end... etc). THAT IS IT. There is nothing else, that is the problem with CoH. Add that to the fact that you are running around cities and doing the same missions over and over, there are like 3 types of missions, you kill x ammounts of guys, you go into a building and clear it out(while getting something, hostages, bombs), or you deliever a mission. The game is good, but gets old cause there is nothing else.

Games like WoW and other games have a lot more depth, yes you can get into trade skills and so forth, but they actually have ITEMS. You can actually trade things with other people, and pick up things of monsters. You upgrade your character while playing the game. WoW also has a lot more quests, ya the basic types of quests are the same with some other options, but there are a TON MORE. In CoH you can have 3 quests/missions at a time. In WoW you can have a lot more, the max I have had is over 15 at one time. There are over 1400quests in the game.

I am addicted to WoW more then I ever was for CoH, it was something I played to pass the time when I was bored. WoW is great cause they actually spent a lot of time adding depth to the game.

ps. Don't get me wrong, CoH is fun, but it only lasted a month on my attention span. I had more fun trying all the power types out then actually leveling up after 14.

Items isn't depth. As for quests, there are different types of quests after level 20, they aren't all the same thing. But - and I have played WoW - if you break it down to the basics, the quest are the same. WoW has trade skills and items, much like EQ and DaOc, but that isnt' some radical dynamic. To say CoH misses that stuff isn't right, it's more that CoH doesn't worry about it. It's a more pure game.

Now, WoW is very cool, and I will get it. But none of these games have really advanced much from EQ, they just do certain things better and better as they come out.

I agree there. There hasn't been much of a MMORPG revolution. WoW is just taking the game mechanics of others games, and improving upon them. They have little inovations and ideas that are great, but nothing ground breaking.

I have enjoyed COH, but have taken a break to play WoW for a while. City of Heroes is nice because it is easy to pick up, get a group and go kill stuff. And it is just Fun. And they have travel powers at a low lvl which is realllly nice.
I hate walking around for 10 min.

I'll probably play COH until WoW comes out in 2010

Does that mean WoW waits for the new MMORGs come out and then incorporates it into the WoW universe? That means it's never coming out!

In CoH, can you make people with worthless powers, like Jubilee from X-men? Or the Green Lantern? Or Aquaman?

Aquaman would kick your ass in the water. His pet dolphin would totally molest you.

Does this game have pvp? Do the bad pvp get to run amuck?

Gonna have to go with Canta on this one. Green Lantern was really powerful. Any time his ring's not out of power it's crazy time.
