UT '04 DVD edition install problem

A basic question but I've never yet installed a PC game on my PC since adding a DVD drive, maybe a year ago?
I finally picked up UT '04 at BB, loaded it into the DVD drive, nothing happens.
I click on E:\setup.exe, click autorun, try start, run E:\setup (DVD is my E drive) and no matter what, it says that it's "not a valid Win32 application".

Yep, it's for PCs too....NOT MACS, Playstations, etc. OS is Win2K and my PC exceeds all other requirements too SO before I return it for the cd-rom version, any ideas?

I've now replaced this DVD with another one, BB let me exchange it yet the same problem exists.

It will install on my laptop (don't get that message) but that doesn't have the power to play it nor do I want games on my 3 yr old laptop. There's then some setting issue with my gaming PC with its newer DVD drive.

...............................................................................................

System specs: AMD T-bird 1.4, Shuttle AK31, 1024mb Samsung PC2700 DDR, GeForce2 GTS, SB Live, (2) 18gb SCSI Seagate Cheatah X15s ,Win2K , 16X DVD-rom drive, CDR burner.
.................................................................................................... ...

No hardware conflicts, DVD drive plays DVDs and reads other DVDs. Opens and reads files on UT '04 too.
Have also tryed turning off NAV and ZA Pro but those aren't the problem either.

The first thing I would try is update the DVD drivers. If that doesn't work, try copying the drive's contents to your hard disk and run the setup file from there. If the files all copy, that will tell you your drive isn't having problems reading the data on the disk.
Also, I'd check for spyware. They tend to alter how your OS runs exe's. Oh, you should check for virii as well.

It could be a bad disk. But if you can read if off another DVD drive that might not be the answer. But it sounds like you've eliminated all the other options so I'd suggest this course.

Oh no!! He went there.. Almost as bad as Ribtich coming by to say how his mac version worked. Anyways, i would say copying the cd to the harddrive as was mentioned above. Hmm do you have any other versions of UT installed that might be conflicting? or you could go to the website of the game and ask them.. They might know since people may have bumped into this before. Or a UT forum. Just a thought...

Hmmm, I installed that drive maybe a year ago but don't have a specific driver disc for it so Windows says that it's using Win2K cd-rom drivers from '99. Can't try upgrading drivers as I don't know now who made it. I removed the unit and don't see any name brand on this thing at all....must be "high quality" stuff

Guess I havent tryed installing any DVD programs with it ever. I brought some older DVD programs home from work and same problem, fails to start any program install. Also can't copy anything from game DVD onto my HDD either.

SO......looks to me as though I need a better, new DVD drive

I did say that I was (J/K).

BTW... as far as the DVD player is concerned, does it have the proper DMA setting in the BIOS? Maybe the problem is there.

Also... are you sure that the Administration settings aren't locking you out? Are you on the "admin" account to do installs?

I hadn't thought of that. If nothing else, try another profile altogether.

Did you check for spyware? http://www.lavasoftusa.com

I don't see the problem on Atari's Win2k Common problems website Perhaps, dropping them a line might put you on the right track ?

I exchanged the DVD version for the cd-rom version and finally got it installed. Hopefully Doom 3 (IF it'll even be playable on my "vintage" PC ) will still be available on cd-rom too?

Perhaps I'll build a new, state of the art PC this winter, when I'll need a new indoor project like that?

Thanks for all your helpfull ideas even though I still don't know why the DVD version refused to install.

When I first got my LiteOn burner 411S, it didn't work with WinXP out of the box. I had to update the firmware to make it work; but it worked great after that.
