Classic Adventure Games! (old school)
Hey all,
I'm into all the vintage games, those considerd 'abandonware' or anything realy from my childhood. You cannot imagine the old adventure games without the name 'Sierra' comming to mind, They pioneered the genre with their classic "King's Quest" series, and added to that an abundance of enjoyable Quest series. If you have news, questions, coments, fond memories, or anything to share about the good old days of Adventure games, or are a part of the small but indismissible group who are trying to bring adventure gaming back, then make a post and we'll see where this forum takes us. - Jon

To start off, if you love the 'King's Quest' or 'Quest for Glory' series, then you need to check out http://www.agdinteractive.com/ . These guys call themselves Tierra and they put alot of work into reconstructing some of these classic adventure games for us. I hope you have as much fun playing them as I did.

I love the Kings Quest games. My favorites were 2, 5 and 6. I bought this KQ collection off some guy on ebay a couple years back but I had a lot of problems running it in XP. Oh well...
I'm downloading KQ 2 off of that site you linked right now. ![]()

Dos Emulator!
One more thing,
if any of you are playing old games in Windows (any version) and experiencing problems, you need to download DosBox. That's right, it's an emulator of the old DOS operating system, and it plays old games very sucessfuly. It converts your sound card to the correct Sound Blaster settings too, so enjoy playing with sound! http://dosbox.sourceforge.net Last edited by Jontas : 09-18-2004 at 03:26 AM. The very first adventure game I played for the PC was something called "LOOM" (I still actually have the CD here). The main thing I remember is that you would perform "spells" on various objects by keying in a sequence of notes. For all you Zelda fans, yes this means that Ocarina of Time was NOT the first game to use such a system.
It was a simple game, but back when I had my first 2x CD-ROM drive, it was my first taste of adventure games (next was King's Quest 5). |

I've kept some of the classics that I used to like and still pull them out from time to time. If anyone wants me to e-mail them a copy, let me know.
Rogue (now we're talking old school) Nuke War Kings Bounty Anyone out there ever play UFO? I love that game and picked up a copy, but it runs too fast on todays computers. |

Zork has been updated and converted quite a few times. I played it on a color mac a few years back, for instance. Zork never dies, it just gets parsed better.

Dude, you know it! I was way too addicted to that game, and I loved all three of them. There are utilities that slow down your computer (like cpukiller), which allow you to run the old games at a playable speed. However if you use the dosbox, you'll probably be okay. http://www.cpukiller.com http://dosbox.sourceforge.net Last edited by Jontas : 09-20-2004 at 01:40 PM. |

Thanks for the links. I knew there were programs out there, but I never took the time to loof for them. I had only played the first UFO when I was in college, but I picked up a pack that had all three in them. I'll have to check out the slowing program! |

Friendlyware
I don't know if any of you guys remember, but back in the day there was a program called friendlyware, which was actually a collection of a whole bunch of little games. I spent an eternity playing those little games. Good times.

The Shareware title Gateworld (1993) was a great game, and going back even earlier who could forget the 255 screens of Activision's classic Pitfall.

I'm glad I noticed this thread! I almost never hang out in the games area, but I am an avid abandonware collector and player. I've got probably well over 100 titles of varying age. I'm currently working my way through the Wizardrys (on 3 now, using an apple emulator that can emulate the apples 2, 2C, and 2E), as well as Commander Keen 6 and PGA Tour Golf.
