modded xbox question

So I acquired a used xbox...
it's old and obviously modded since there are broken stickers over the screw holes on the bottom.

the individual who I got it from also provided a few backups and informed me that I have to hold the power button for 3 seconds to load them. the box will load to the normal xbox screen if I just turn it on (no holding power button).

I did a brief search to find out if the way it was modded will allow me to play XBL. Unfortunately I didn't find much except that it is an old way people used to mod their boxes.

So does anyone know if I can take this online before I spend money on an XBL account that I might not be able to use?

TIA

Microsoft's getting very very organized in searching Xbox hardware for modifications (of any sort; ie upgraded hard drives or dvd drives even). Apparently when you sign onto Live they check all sorts of stuff about your hardware and from what I've read, even the newest chips out there are being detected.

Sorry man I don't think you're going to be able to enjoy Live at all (which is a shame 'cause it's the $#!t). You can use the XBConnect software most likely (someone I work with who owns a modded Xbox uses XBConnect and says it's ok but not as good as Live) but you're probably never going to be able to use Live.

Keep in mind that if you are blacklisted they tie it into your system's serial # and so forth; apparently each Live subscriber's account is tied to their Xbox serial # and vice versa and once your system is banned from Live you can't just simply make a new account - you're banned for good. I think someone's trying to make (or has made) a program that can reset your serial # or something but I don't know anything about that 'cause my Xbox is not modded and it will stay that way, especially since I've been a Live subscriber for over 2 yrs now.

Google Xbox scene or something like that, I'm sure there's tons of info out there on this stuff.

From the little I understand about mods, some can be turned off with a physical switch which allows the box to go online with the mod undetected. So I guess I actually meant to ask if anyone knew whether or not the type of mod described for my system would allow me to sign on. Since I can still access the MS screen which wont play the back ups, is the mod "turned off"?

As far as MS detecting modded boxes, I have heard that you wont get banned unless changes are detected in your system after it was initially logged onto XBL. I know people with modded boxes that can still play on XBL due the the mod chip's on/off switch. But then again, perhaps its just a matter of time before they get banned too.

Well if your system has a switch it might be able to be done, I but I believe the early mods didn't have it(could be wrong). Even if you have it, you have to turn it off every single time, and I believe if you forget once... there goes your xbl...

It used to be that they just detected the modded firmware, starting with halo2 and some other games they started checking for upgraded hard drives. If you REALLY want to try xbl i suggest getting another unmodded xbox. Personally i find the xbox more usefull with the mod rather than without since its main purpose is as a media player.

I went to xbox-scene after zero2dash suggested it and ended up having to open my xbox to find that I have a mod chip labeled Aladdin Advanced. Comparing my mod chip to the pictures at xbox-scene, it is more than likely a clone, but oh well...it works. Further research showed that I should be able to play original games on XBL provided that the previous owner didn't get the box banned.

DaFunkyUnit, you may have said it once...thanks for saying it again...I didn't bother to search G|A for answers to my vague question since I wasn't sure what to ask.

Thanks for the responses everyone.
