X360 gets HD-DVD

Well now I'm even more glad I haven't bought one.
http://www.gamespot.com/news/6141859.html

Quote:
...Gates also revealed that the Xbox 360 would be compatible with a next-generation disc format. As expected, the format in question is HD-DVD, the Toshiba-backed rival to Blu-ray Disc, which is
supported by Microsoft's archrival in the next-gen console race, the Sony PlayStation 3. (Ironically,
Toshiba partnered with Sony to produce the PS3's Cell CPU.)

Also, as one might guess given the fact the 360 has an internal standard DVD drive, the console's HD-DVD
drive will be offered as an external peripheral.

-snip-

Quote:
...the drive would arrive later this year. However, he did not show a final form factor for the drive or
name a price point, although stand-alone HD-DVD players are expected to cost in excess of $300.

Anyone want to bet how long it'll be before they replace the internal standard issue DVD drive with an
HD-DVD drive? (instead of offering this add-on)

One more thing referenced in that article is that Street Fighter 2 will soon be a Live Arcade game. Which is cool...

Another thing I saw mentioned (which is absolute BS) -
Quote:
Moore also took the opportunity to underline Microsoft's bullish predictions for the 360. First, he
touted the high attach rates for the console--an average of four games and three accessories per
console. Moore said that was "twice the previous record" without naming a specific platform--or the
fact most consoles were sold in pre-order bundles with games included.

TOTAL bs.
The only reason people bought 4 games + 3 accessories is either a) the stores came up with a ridiculous
tacky bundle set that you were forced to buy (see also: Gamestop/EB Games) or b) the retail chain (see
also: some Best Buys) made you purchase extra stuff in order to buy an X360 console. Does the system
(honestly) have 4 games worth owning (not including the "widely acclaimed" Geometry Wars). PGR3, PDZ
(maybe), CoD2 (if you don't already own the PC one), and...an EA game...? + 3 accessories? Sure, why not
throw in a plasma screen and a set of Monster cables to hook everything up while you're at it, there,
Peter.

Did anyone (who has bought one) purchase 4 games + 3 accessories when they bought the system? I've never heard of anyone buying that much stuff with the system...most people could only afford the system + 1 or 2 games.

External, eh? That'll be ugly. Not exactly what I want to have to find a place for in my living room. Guess they should have made the drive that's on it user-swappable.

i bought the live gold kit, a wireless controller, and 2 games. i played the demo of fight night 3 last night, and think that will be my next game.

I would like HD-DVD, but it looks like the games will not use it, so i may or may not get one when released. Plus most HT's do not meet the needs of true HD-DVD. I just lack the # of speakers, and a 7 channel amp.

When I got the xbox 360, I bought one additional controller and a one month xbox live gold kit. I bought 3 games, COD2, Kameo, and PGR3. I would have bought one more controller right then, but my brother and his friend (which happens to be my sister's bf of 4.5 years) are buying controller 3 and 4. I would have also purchased the one year xbox live gold kit instead of the one month, but my birthday in jan 21, and am expecting to recieve that.

Yet again another f***ing joke of a console from Micro$oft.

Seriously, can anyone here compare this to the Pentium2 fiasco?

Recalls wha?

Oh, and your lovely PSP wasn't declared "faulty" by a lot of people when it came out? (remember the dead pixel fiasco?)

Seriously, a lot of people are blowing this way out of proportion (as they did with the PSP's). You'll always hear more negative stuff than positive stuff.

What the hell are you talking about?

The HD-DVD will not be for playing games, but movies only.

I think it's a great idea, as long as it doesn't cost too much. It would also be nice if they made a really big, fully-animated FMV RPG with the HD-DVD as a killer ap.

I read that last night...I think when the news came out, everyone (including me) thought they would move to HD-DVD game based discs, but the most recent article about the add-on specifies that they will only support HD-DVD movies and they won't make HD-DVD games.

Honestly I don't know how much of a difference it will or will not make since all Sony has done over the last year and a half is blow a lot of smoke up people's @$$es with the Ps3 hype. ("We'll use BluRay for everything. Standard DVD format will not fit the games of the future." blah blah blah)
