600,000 Xbox 360 units sold in U.S.

600,000 Xbox 360 units sold in U.S.

Microsoft has sold 600,000 of its new Xbox 360 video game consoles in the United States since the gadget's November launch, an analyst for market researcher The NPD Group said on Friday.

The Xbox 360 debuted to much fanfare on Nov. 22 in North America, where the unit has been in short supply. Analysts, video game publishers and retailers have said shipments during the key holiday season fell short of expectations.

Microsoft last week confirmed its target of selling between 4.5 million and 5.5 million Xbox 360 consoles during the current business year, which ends June 30, 2006.

A spokeswoman for Microsoft was not immediately able to comment.

Sony the world's biggest video game console maker, and Nintendo are preparing to ship their next-generation machines in 2006.

The NPD Group measures nearly two-thirds of retail sales in the United States and makes projections for the remainder of the year.

That number seems a bit high, but

600,000 isnt too hard to believe. 100,000 of them probably ended up on ebay. amazon seems to get them instock daily.

yeah, the supply has been short, but steady... i dl'ed this cute little program that checks realtime bestbuy inventory near your zipcode and sounds an alarm when they're in stock... after 3 days of nothing, the alarm went off at 11 am last thursday, and i zipped over and got one. free remote in the bundle, too

ebay prices have dropped from $800+ for the $400 bundle to about $450 as of today, so you can tell teh demand is almost met at this point.

I'd say 600k is waay high

But the much more realistic numbers are:

599,999 sold.
37 built sofar.
36.5 already shipped in for repair/recall/BSOD

what a joke of a 'release'.

Fish!

360 is doing horrendous in Japan. Microsoft hoped that they'd have better sales with the 360 in Japan with the larger Japanese developer support, but so far...not so good.

I read that Microsoft claimed they'd sell something like 3 million in 3 months...they've since rescinded that claim and backed off on a more likely number...something like 1.5mil/3mos (pretty likely, if they ever keep up with demand).

I'm still waiting for a reason to buy one myself, but that's just me. Without the HD support at home...it's just not worth it for me.
