Thumbs up

Oh cool, thanks! I love DVD's. Does it have Dolby Digital or DTS encoding?

Just kidding

Solaris is really nothing to write home about for the average user. I use it every day at work; it's great for technical applications and for working in teminal/console windows, but the average home user has no real use for the operating system.

Just an FYI so you aren't disappointed.

Yep.

For all you folks out there considering this realize Solaris is a lot more unforgiving about the parts it will run with.

For those of you with SPARC hardware, you can also download Solaris 8 for free from: http://wwws.sun.com/software/solaris/binaries/get.html

They used to have the Intel version there, but it's been pulled. Also you will be able to download Solaris 9 from them sometime in the near future.

Thanks anyway! Free is better than...having to pay lots of money, or something like that....

Unhappy

If you're thinking of using it on your PEE-CEE, don't bother ordering it -- Solaris 9 ONLY runs on Sparc hardware.. There was even something about it within the last few days on /. (slashdot) and how Sun dropped support for x86 hardware.. Probably got tired of writing drivers for cards that came & went..

I heard a few months ago Sun was considering dropping support for x86 processors. Looks like they finally did it.
