18.1" LCD for $299 + S&H, no kidding

I searched around for it--it was released in 2000 and retailed for over $2000. It has no digital input, so I am not going to order one.

I would expect better than 1280x1024 on that size of monitor. That's how you can tell it's 3 years old. I'd expect 1600x1200.

DVI *MAY* offer a better picture, but...

"DVI makes monitor setup a complete piece of piss (that's a technical term), but it's pretty close to that even without DVI. Connect VGA cable, turn everything on, press the Auto button, tweak contrast and brightness to taste (you'll still have brightness adjustment when using DVI), and then maybe, maybe, adjust the pixel clock setting a tad, and you're done.

The image quality difference between DVI and VGA should approach zero, assuming you take a moment to set up the screen. Modern LCDs and video cards deal with the inelegant digital-to-analogue-to-digital dual-conversion process very well. People running dual identical LCDs from the two outputs of a regular VGA-plus-DVI video card can often tell the difference, but that's what it takes; it's not something worth getting excited about.

Lousy VGA cables and/or connectors can create lots of blur and ghosting at medium resolutions (1280 by 1024 at 85Hz, which is the most you'll be running here), but with a modern video card and the OK quality cable...there shouldn't be a problem..."

I hardly see any 18" LCD with 1600x1200 resolution. Most of them have native resolution @ 1280x1024.

I guess I should have said that "I would want" 1600x1200 if I'm getting a larger LCD display. I'm running a 17" right now and I wish that the resolution was higher even at this size.

For price comparison purposed, a no-name brand 18-inch LCD monitor at Fry's Electronics (seattle area) goes for $379. The display picture looks pretty reasonable for an analogue input LCD monitor. It lacks the super brightness and dynamic color range of one of the more expensive Planar monitors, but it also lacks the high price tag.

As for comparison between DVI and analogue inputs, where it most obviously shows up is the slightly less sharp edges of text characters on the screen. When comparing, bring up a notepad window and use various font sizes (especially small fonts) and you will see the difference immediately.

If you like the sharp crisp black characters on a white laptop screen, then you like DVI input.

Here is the mini announcement from march 2000

The key thing they state is it does have a cool feature I have on my Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 2040u - two hookups. On mine, its a BNC and a HD15, on the sharp its two analog HD15s, switch on the front to change PCs. I use that a lot.

It says on the site that it has one analog imput and video inputs. Does this mean i can hook this baby upt o a dvd player and use it like a tv?

they were most likely refering to an analog VGA connector...(as opposed to a DVI connector)

From another thread I just posted, Apex says that DVI isn't all that much better. The cable costs a fortune, and basically the recommendation was not to worry about that. Look for other things like dot pitch and contrast ratio!

There is no reason to get an 18" or 19" LCD at this point in time. 18" and 19" LCD's are basically the same specs as the 17" ones, but stretched out, so your image will not look as crisp on either, you're just paying for a physical stretch. I bought an 18" NEC and realized this, so I'm happy to say it is back at Staples and I'm planning to wait till 18" or 19" gain improvement to lower dot pitches than 0.28 and 0.29 (and higher resolution), or the 20" comes down in price.
