I didn't realize that people with half a brain still use AOL. Even if they paid me, I wouldn't use AOL. There was an article I read recently that said that a lot of people keep their crummy ISP's because they don't want to bother contacting everybody if they change it. That has to be the ONLY reason people stay with AOL.

I have Erols as my ISP. It is the best!!. I rarely get knocked off; I have no problems getting on; their tech support is courteous and helpful. It's only $99.00 for 6 months of prepaid service. However, I think it's only available in the Northeast. I had AOL before switching. What a waste! And their tactics are really scary when you try to get rid of them. Their customer service is the absolute worst. They rank up there with used car salesmen!Everyone that I know who has AOL says the same thing, but like most Americans, they say OH Well!! and try to change the subject when you mention changing. I guess that's the reason it's called America On Line. It must represent something about modern day America.

AOL is f*%# up. What they mean by "no credit card required" is to use your checking account.

Absolutely correct. Do a ratings/review search on deja.com on ISPs, and AOL is dead last. http://www.deja.com/channels/channel.xp?CID=11970 |

don't expect great things from them but they are BETTER than aol by a long shot and most of their bandwidth was UUNET i rarely got kicked off "when i had modem" i once said i wouldnt have aol if they paid me to...i still won't ![]() |

Holy Smokes
I didn't see this coming... I actually just posted cause I thought it sounded funny, but if you want my 2 cents....
I know a family who go a cable modem and had aol piggyback. They pay 49.99 for CBL and 9.99 for access to AOL... They asked me if there was a cheaper way, I said yea cut the cord to AOL... The said that that wouldn't be an option since they wanted to use E-mail still.... Obviously AOL has done a good job...at mind warping. |

For most of people I know who still use AOHell, the reasons they don't want to change ISP are 'cause they all love AOHell's email also they have been using AOHell since the beginning. Yeah, I used AOHell for 2, 3 years before. The busy signal and 50min online check really piss me off.

AOLer
Wow you guys, harsh onto AOL.
I've been on AOL for 6 years. why am I on it? because there was a time when it was one of the VERY FEW companies through which I could connect to the internet! I kept it through UCLA and just signed on for email through TCPIP. I've never had a prob with AOL--half of the time I had school connections and I never had to deal with slow servers, but come on, not ALL AOL users are "half brainers!" A good number of them probably also post deals on GOT APEX! Hint hint hint... |

Back when I first wanted internet I used AOhell. The trick is to use your free month and then cancel and they will call you and offer you another free month. I did this a few times until I was fed up with the damn service even if it WAS free.

hmm I've never had problems with finding a good isp, as long as i can remember we've always had at least 10 isp other than the national ones. I'm talking like 8-9 years ago here. For the longest time i was with this one 0-profit isp that charged 20 bucks (while everyone else charged 30+) and they had the best service. only once did i try aol just to see what all the hoot was about (5 years ago) and it just sucked ass. I got spammed a whole lot and evertime i'd connect i'd have to wait 5 min for it to load ads to show me before i could even use the service.

of crappy ISPs from days gone by. At, least they would be crappy by AOhell's standards, oh sure. AOL is the best...eh... so they say.

AOL
I used AOL up until about a month ago. I signed up for it in 1995, back when unlimited access was $19.95...just like pretty much all the other companies at the time. I did have major problems connecting for awhile, but the last two or three years, the dial-up connections worked pretty well. I, like many people, kept it around only because I didn't want to change e-mail addresses. Finally, I said f*** it and got a Yahoo! email address and WorldSpy, which was a free ISP that didn't have any banner ads. WorldSpy sold out to Juno last month, so I got Juno, which has banner ads like FreeInternet.com and Bluelight (K-marts free ISP). Now, I've got a cable connection free from the university, so I'm finally off the dialups.
When I called AOL to cancel my account, the tech support lady kept going on and on about how I was on the wrong billing plan and that I could save money by being on this other plan. I told her that I was getting FREE Internet and e-mail and that it was completely stupid for me to continue paying for AOL, but she still kept trying to persuade me. |
