I have an ASUS P3V4X Mother Board. I'm still using a PII-350 Processor. I didn't get a new processor when I got the MB, Case and Video Card. I've been looking for a Fast P3, last night I found http://www.overclockwarehouse.com/ and they have an Intel FC-PGA Coppermine 700E with a with Globalwin FOP38 Heat Sink and Fan for $318. They say it will run at 1008MHz if you switch the FSB to 144MHZ.

I have PC133 ram, will that also run at 144MHz, or does it matter?

What is the difference between the Coppermine 700 and the coppermine 700E? Or the 700EB?

Is it worth the extra money to get a processor from overclockwarehouse.com because they test them, and make sure that are stable overclocked?

I assume my MB will handle it as http://www.overclockers.com lists many people with the ASUS P3V4X who are running P3700s at speeds over 1000MHz.

All Coppermines have the "E" designation. It means it uses the .18 micron technology.

"EB" means that it is supposed to run at 133 Mhz FSB. If you are planning on overclocking, DO NOT get the "EB".

"I have PC133 ram, will that also run at 144MHz, or does it matter?" Maybe. Some PC133 ram will run at 144Mhz and some PC133 ram won't run at that speed. You may have to turn down the memory settings in the bios in order to achieve that speed CyberJay.

Some people thinks its worth buying a pretested overclocked cpu. Other people like the thrill of finding out how high a cpu will be overclocked.

ASUS P3V4X is one of the best VIA Apollo Pro 133a motherboards for overclocking.

I've been overclocked different CPU (Celeron 300A/Celeron FC-PGA 600/PII 400/PIII FC_PGA 600E) on my P3V4X with Mushkin's PC133. They are all successful and no blue screen whatsoever. Before I upgraded my generic PC133 to Mushkin, I couldn't push CPU as far and the blue screen pops out pretty often. I think the quality of your memory takes a very important role.

There are only two flavors of the P3 700.... the Slot 1 and the FC-PGA. There is no 700EB. All P3 700s will run at 700MHz on a 100MHz front side bus. Increase the bus speed to 101MHz, and that same chip will be running at 707MHz. Increase the bus to 110MHz, and it will run at 770MHz.... and so on.

And buy PC150 RAM if you want to run a higher bus speed than 133MHz.

Although, your RAM may work... you never know. Some PC133 sticks of RAM can work at higher speeds. Just try first. If not, get the PC150.

Thank You, for all your input. I would love to just buy a 1Ghz processor, but a $300 700MHz running at 1000MHz sounds much better then a $1000 1Ghz Processor running at the same speed.

As for the Thril of doing it myself. I've always built my own PCs, but there is only so much expiramenting I'm comfortable with. I'd rather spend $300 on a processor I know will work then spend $200 and Kill it the first week.
I'd love to tell people "my PC is running at over 1Ghz and I built it myself for under $1000." The idea of Overclocking is so cool. Like the Hot Rod guys in the 50's building Greesed Lightning!

An important part of my origional question involved the need to test the processor. From what it sounds like two boxes with all the same numbers on them may yeld different results? So I couldn't just order the same processor & fan to save $50 or so and expect the same results. I might get them but I may not. Also I think that was a flip chip and I have a slot 1. Is there any problem with useing an adapter? I know they adpters are suppose to work, but will they work overclocked as well?

Processors can come from the same batch and week and one processor will overclock well and the other will overclock poorly. So it depends on the individual processor.

Sometimes you'll hear people saying there are good weeks for processors. This means the processors produced in that week are overclocking well. But remember this. There's no guarantee for you to buy a untested cpu and expect it to overclock as much as you want. The only way you'll find out is by testing it.

There shouldn't be any problems Cyber Jay. The adapters themselves are not overclocked by the way. I have a Celeron 2 566 overclocked to 876Mhz on an Abit BH6 motherboard. I'm using Iwill's slocket II adapter.

Also since you have an Via Apollo Pro 133A motherboard you can run the memory and system bus at different speeds. For example if your system bus speed is high and you know your memory can't take that speed then just run your memory at a lower speed.

PS Intel is going to cut their prices soon because they are getting reamed by AMD. The $669 1GHz Pentium III drops to $465. The 933MHz Pentium III will fall from its current $508 price to $348.
