SATA drives and IDE drives

For my pc, I plan to setup a SATA drive as my main drive and have an IDE drive for storage space. Will there be any conflicts/issues that people can think of? Also, how does the master/slave thing work out when you use 2 different drive controllers at the same time? Will I being slowing my computer down? I can just stick to 2 ide drives if i want to.

I have both. I put my primary and secondary drives on SATA and my other drive on IDE and it works fine.

What i hate though is how the connectors for SATA don't stay in. They fall out very easily...sucks.

Apparently newer motherboards are coming with a redesigned connector that keeps them in place a little better (it's not a different connector on the cable end -- just the motherboard).

....sadly it doesn't help current SATA owners much.

So...I'm not the only one that noticed this?

How the F*CK did this get released as a standard? It's not just the mobo though. It's also the connection to the drive. It's like they designed the cables to fall out if the case moves.

grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...and this is supposed to be a superior standard to IDE. HAH.

Sorry to go off topic Carry on.

I've had some issues booting off a Sata Drive. I use an IDE drive instead for that.

Just make sure your mobo can read it as a boot device (most can, but some need some extra modifications (ini files and stuff).

The software issues are the primary concern for most people, i.e. getting things to want to boot off SATA... As for the cable falling out, I havent really seen much of a problem with that. I know in our enterprise servers, the connectors are a little bit thicker so they stick in much better to the connections, granted these are onto hardware, not to the motherboard..
But I havent personally had a problem w/ my desktop and the SATA drive cables...but I dont move the box around too much.

Do you need an IDE controller card then? Maybe it's easier just to run it off an USB external case?

My mobo has both IDE and SATA so that's how I do it.

booting off the SATA drive is all done and directed by the BIOS. My PC is setup to boot from my SATA raptor drive, and i have 2 300GB drives in one IDE ribbon. no problems booting up at all.

when you install an OS though, make sure you disconnect your P-ATA HDDs first. That way the install will only see one drive (the SATA HDD),and the OS install will easily choose it. when your OS install is complete, THEN install your other P-ATA drives.
