IDE and SATA

I was thinking of buying this on the deals page

http://configure.us.dell.com/dellsto...=2d31h11&s=bsd

It is a SATA drive and I've only ever had IDE. How do I take some of the old storage drives in my current and put it in the new computer? Some steps/guides would be great. Thanks

from the specs, it looks like it has at least ONE (1) header for a P-ATA drive (it has an optical drive where its installed). You can definitely put one more IDE drive in that same ribbon as master (but may slow down the drive access since it has an optical drive thats slaved to it).

Im almost certain theres a SECOND IDE header where you can install 2 more IDE drives. i dont currently have the mobo specs of the 3100, but im sure if you dig deep enough with dell's online support, you will find it. it should show you if it has 2 IDE headers.

Nope - just a single IDE on these. I just bought a couple of these machines for my in-laws, and there is only one IDE channel. You can hang 2 optical drives, or an optical & an IDE drive. There's also room for one additional SATA drive.

There are also no PS2, serial or parallel ports on these - everything is USB, so be ready for that. If you can get by these things, they are great machines.

We got one at my job a few months ago. They are really good machines - just be sure to get the Dell Decrapifier 'cause they are loaded with junk.

Great little script that deletes all of the crap that Dell loads on there for ya. Faster than reloading or manually uninstalling:
