Celeron versus P4

What kind of difference is there? Seems like most of my friends believe celeron is kind of crappy. Performance difference?

It's all about the Core today. I believe the main difference between he Celeron and the P4 is the P4 has more Cache which does indeed make it faster. I'm no expert though.

For everyday use like surfing, office apps & mail, you'll never notice the difference.

For gaming, video editing or 3D apps, you're better off with a non-celeron.

the celeron is about the worst chip available on the market... Intel cripples them soooo much it's just ridiculous. I haven't even bothered to look at them for a few years so it could be different now but i doubt it.

My laptop has a 1.5 Celeron processor. I have absolutely no complaints. I have used DVD Shrink and Nero to burn movies with no problems.

the celeron used to have a bad name after being crippled around the time the P3s came out. (celerons around the time P2s came out were just as fast and easily overclockable, hence the crippling after). Now its become the VALUE alternative chip for the P4s. For the speed you cant beat the price, if youre only going to do word processing and surfing the net (like what jeffbx said), and the occassional image processing (viewing, cropping, resizing).

if you dont care about computer innards, go for it. the price is excellent.
but if youre a power-user, skip it.

Not a bit. As a matter of fact, I used a Celeron as my primary processor at home for about a year and a half with great results, and I regularly ran 3D FPS games on it (Half Life, Quake 3, etc.)

If you're working with a tight budget, it's a great option.
