lappy RAM help!
so I just got a dell system, and it came with 512 megs of ram. anywho...to make a long story short, I bought a 1 gig stick of ram for the lappy. now...my question is.
1) the speed of the 512 stick of ram is 533 mhz, and the speed of the 1 gig stick is pc5300 ddr2 667 mhz. NOW...my question is, right now the 512 stick is bottle necking the 1 gig stick down to 533 mhz. Would it be better to have 1.5 gigs of ram at 533 mhz, or a 1 gig stick at 667 mhz? discuss... TIA ![]()

If I recall correctly, DDR 533MHz is all that the laptop would run the RAM at anyways -- even if your modules were designed to run faster.
This is how my XPS2 is from what I recall, and it uses DDR2 memory as well. Even if it did run faster, the difference wouldn't be all that noticeable -- I'd say run the 1.5GB of memory @ 533MHz speed. ...and on a different note, WHY do so many people call it a LAPPY? It's a LAPTOP or NOTEBOOK. (Just a little pet peeve of mine)

sorry....lappy...it's I just thought it was easier to say lappy then it was to say laptop....plus...it's smoother to say.
anywho...whats the difference between a notebook and a laptop? I guess I can google it...but might as well post the question here. anywho...the laptop says it can run 667 mhz modules, so that would be a tidbit to know. |

Laptop=notebook=portable - they're all the same.
And for those of you with poor reading comprehension, there is no such thing as a laBtop. Never has been. Anyhoo, to answer your question, let's assume your machine does support the 667MHz RAM. Now, what apps are you running on it? It's not that common to need more than 1GB on everyday apps, so I'd be inclined to recommend that you run with 1GB of the faster RAM & ebay that other 512. |

Actually if he bought the extra ram, it means he won't be using common everyday apps (i'm guessing he wants some games and stuff or photoshop to run on it). Keep the ram and just add it. The MHZ lost is so minute that unless you physically test the thing, you won't notice the difference. If sandra scores mean that much to you, then put in and remove the ram as signified above. If losing 100 points on that scale doesn't bug you much (and it really should not), the extra 512 will help quite a bit. |

If the FSB of your CPU is only 533Mhz, the 667Mhz wouldn't go any faster anyway.

FSB on the 1505 is 667MHz.
I say (depending on your apps), pull the 512MB & ebay it, run on 1GB & then down the road when you have some spare cash, get an additional matching 1GB so you can run dual channel 667MHz. |

FWIW, I just eBayed a 512 stick of "lappy" DDR and got $30 for it. I only charged $2 for shipping, which seemed to draw in some bidders.
![]() Good luck with whatever you choose!
