AMD Slashes Prices on Some Processors

http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2007/02...e_cuts_feb_07/

AMD has followed up last week's Opteron price cuts with a round of reductions applied to its Athlon-brand processors. The latest cuts affect both single- and dual-core versions of the 64-bit CPU family.

While Athlon 64 FX and Quad FX processor cost as much to buy now as they did yesterday, the 64 X2 series are now between 8.1 per cent and 45 per cent less expensive to buy. The biggest reductions come at the upper end of the range.

No X2s were dropped from AMD's public price list, but the single-core Athlon 64 3200+ has now been pruned. The 3500+ saw its price cut 3.3 per cent to $88, while the 3800+ is now 7.9 per cent cheaper, at $93.

Now that AMD's server and desktop processors have seen their prices cut, attention will turn to the company's mobile offerings and is budget-desktop lines.

AMD only cut Sempron prices as recently as January this year, but it also cut Athlon prices at the same time. If they can fall a second time, albeit by fairly small margins, why not anticipate further Sempron price cuts?
