CDRs actually killed the Zip disk right around 1999, maybe Y2K.

Once affordable blank media was available & the drives started dopping in price, that was the end of the Zip disk.

Had a zip drive for our old Macintosh LCIII because we ran out of storage space. Once we upgraded it was cheaper to burn things to CD or buy another hard drive.

I used it a good bit when I first started college just before the turn of the century (doesn't that sound quaint?), but this was before the rise of large e-mail accounts, flash drives, or even common CD's.

Once the Army's webmail gave soldiers a fifty meg limit, I used that for file storage and transfer. By the time I got out of the Army, I had a laptop, a small flash drive, and other e-mail services had gotten big too, so data portability wasn't an issue. Gmail got on the scene in '04 and flash drives got bigger.

By that point, zip drives had been dead for over two-three years.

So in my long, rambling prose, no. I don't use zip drives.

I bought an internal one after having an external one. CD burners were on the expensive side still. It was probably in the late 90's that were dying fast once the media dropped below a dollar a disk. I still have internal zip drives installed on the machines that my client receives from Dell. I don't know why but I guess it's part of their standard config as requested by the client.

At work we still have a machine that uses floppies as the primary storage device, no zips, or CD burner. It does have USB ports but nobody has bothered to get Win95 to use them. (HEH!!!) It has software from the early 90's that is still used to run a microscope in my lab. The machine and software still perform adequately and the cost of the software is high enough to discourage an (unneeded) upgrade. It's not my machine and I don't use the microscope, so I really don't care.

I have an internal zip drive and 3 disks if anyone is looking for one. Be happy to send it in the mail if you pay the postage and $5 for my time to go send it.

I used to have the Jazz drive (1GB/disk) version of the zip drive which I used for quite a while. Got rid of it years ago though.
