Shouldn't Counterstrike run silky on a Cele600 @ 900 with 192MB RAM and a Voodoo 3 3000? This is a friend's computer... but I can't figure it out. I ran like a charm on his old Gateway P3 450 with the same video card... with 128MB RAM.

It has DirectX 8 and the latest Voodoo 3 drivers. What is something OBVIOUS that I could be overlooking?

Quick System Rundown:

BE6-II
Celeron 600 @ 900 (running cool to the touch under an Orb, BTW)
Voodoo 3 3000 (166MHz)
192MB RAM PC100
Sound Blaster Live!

It skips frames at 8x6 when it never skiped at 10x7 on the old one. What on Earth could I be missing here?

I have the AGP Ap. set at 64MB.

What other BIOS settings could affect this?

Thanks,

Dave.

Its strange how a system with a faster cpu and more ram doesn't perform better than a system with a slower cpu and lesser ram.

The AGP aperture setting won't affect your framerates.

I have heard of DirectX 8 causing problems like slow framerates for people.

Are CounterStrike settings the same as before? What about the Voodoo 3 driver? Do the videocard and soundcard have an irq each to themselves? Take a look at your soundcard settings in Windows and CS.

If you are still in desparate need of some help, I suggest trying this solution. I have not tried this DirectX uninstaller myself, so I cannot verify that it works 100% of the time. However, if you do not want to wipe the drive and re-install Windows just to see if the problem was DirectX 8, this is a viable alternative. However, you may run the risk of having to reformat and install Windows again anyway if this does not work properly; I leave the choice up to you.

Did you read the news on the front page? Now that the Voodoo cards will no longer be supported, all of them are going to stop working in the next month or so.

Another thing you'll have to consider is that your friend was running a P3 before, but is running a Celeron now. While the clockspeed may be twice as fast on the overclocked Celery, the P3 is still more of a workhorse than the Celeron, even at a slower speed.

Yes... that is funny Jeffbx.

Anyways, you raise an interesting point, coleslaw. I tried it with a P3 500 but to no avail. Still dropping frames. Cripes, this is testing me.
