Depends which kind... there are different types

1) Direct storage of any data/songs:
iRiver and a few others have it so that the storage space is just like an external hard drive. Doesn't matter if you have .mp3's or .doc/.xls/any other file. This is personally what I'm used to and like.

2) iPod and other "managed" data storage:
This is all second hand knowledge, but you need 50% or more of your iPod storage space to be free to be able to load data on it. I don't think it's as plug-and-play to get data on and off as option 1, but it could be.

3) Small flash-based MP3 players:
Not sure.

yes. at least with an iPod you can.

during post-production, one of the LOTR movies' final "draft" (i forget which one of the 3) was put on an iPod for transport from one studio to the next (i think it was either the 40GB or the 60GB). story goes that the guy transporting it was followed by some shady characters and had to run to escape them.

anyways, yeah, it can be used to store data. as ski said, with most mp3 players its simply drag and drop, others you need a proprietary software.

Yes to Creative players as well. After you've installed their drag and drop interface there's 2 folders available, one for Data another for Music.
